Effects of Radiotherapy

Less than one minute read time.
Hi I am new to this but would welcome any thoughts on what I am going through at the mo. I had a mastectomy and full anxillary clearance in April 08 followed by 6 sessions of chemo and 13 sessions of radiotherapy which finished Nov 08. Except for the painful burning under my arm at first I have been feeling very well and in no pain. In March this year I have been feeling incresingly tired and have been in pain in my left "breast" under my arms and in my top left rib. My GP took a chest x ray and I am now waiting for a bone scan in the next couple of weeks. Has anyone had the same effects. Love Sue x x

  • Hi Susan,

My surgery and treatment was not as severe as yours but I can sympathise. Take a look at my Profile page to read my story. Your poor body has been put through the wringer and it is bound to complain! The scar from the lymph node removal still causes pain a year after my last surgery.  I also feel tired but I put that down to Tamoxifen. (I put almost everything down to Tamoxifen!) Do you have a Macmillan nurse you could talk to about your problems? You can also contact the nurses on this site - click on ASK A NURSE written in blue at the top right of the page.

    Good luck and best wishes,

    KateG

  • Thanks for your comments, I see from your blog that we are about the same age as I will be 60 in August.

I will as you suggest send an e-mail to Ask a nurse as I do not have access to a Macmillan nurse where I live in Worcester.

Will let u know how I get on with the bone scan.

    Regards

    Sue

You describe the same symptons I have been having!  I had my mastectomy with a recon last Jan (08) and finished chemo and radio (25 sessions) in Sept last year.  I have recently had problems with lymphoedema on the recon but have been feeling so tired and the pain in my "breast" and the rib like you describe really get me down.  I have sort of thought I had to live with it but would be interested to see how you get on with your scan.....lots of luck.....

  • Hi Diane

I am due to see the plastic surgeon next Thursday about reconstruction.

I will let u know how i get on with the scan. I had one before surgery and did not think i would have to have another so soon.

My surgeon says it is to put my mind at rest and that the cancer has not spread to my bones as I fear.

Will have to lie still again for 20 mins which seems a bloody long time.

Regards and thanks for your good wishes

    Sue
