Advice?

1 minute read time.

Hello, dear people…

I never thought I would be one to join this forum, but here I am. I have been diagnosed with stomach cancer about 2 months ago and yesterday I got out of the hospital, where I have been admitted for 2 weeks. I had total gastrectomy (stomach removal) and D2 lymphadenectomy. It will still take some time to find out the stage of my cancer but it worries me a lot knowing that even though I underwent these horrible surgeries (plus complications) and I’m in so much pain, I still don’t know what to expect from now on. I still don’t know the stage nor how much time I have left on earth. I don’t know what to expect and I don’t know anything about my career or future anymore. Is anyone able to tell me, how do you cope with such a harsh diagnosis and go around day by day?Is it possible to have a long life if the cancer was caught early? How badly does chemotherapy affect you and your well being (in case I might have to do it once they figure out the stage)?  for bombarding you with all this information, I truly wish you all recover and stay strong through such a difficult period. Please let me know if you have any questions that I could answer.

  • Hi and welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am so sorry to hear about your diagnoses and the journey you are on.

The cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type can help a lot. To widen your platform for support can I recommend you consider joining and posting in our dedicated Stomach cancer support group. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that you have recently been diagnosed with stomach cancer and it's natural to have lots of questions.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you join the stomach cancer group which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and the path that you have had to take. My journey with Bladder Cancer started in May, and completely without symptoms, in fact I had just passed a bowel screening with an all clear.

My approach, for what it is worth ... is just take one step at a time. Don't scan the internet it will scare you. Look to the medical team around, and Macmillan for support and advice. Take each step at a time, follow advice where you can.

There will be a lot to take in, and the path ahead may have a lot of twists and turn in it, so pace yourself. Be gentle with yourself, and listen to what your body needs.

I am just starting my second cycle of Chemo, and actually it wasn't the darkness, and nightmares I was led to believe it was ... Yes I have felt tired, and yes I have had the nausea ... but I have learnt to pace myself.

    Good luck on your journey

  • Thank you very much for all this. I’ve updated my profile. All the best !
