First entry....

Why am I here?

Father was diagnosed with bladder cancer about 5 years ago, urectomy was not an option so they did TURBT with Mytomycin treatement, followed by intensive (37 sessions) of radiotherapy.

He has had regular cystoscopies, and had one more mini-TURBT and Mytomycin, but recently (3-4 weeks ago) had a cystoscopy and was told he needs a full TURBT. Rather concerned as he cannot have a urectomy becuase of other health problems (he is 89 and had a stent fitted because of unstable angina earlier this year. Waiting for the appointment date...

In the meantime, I started having urinary problems arouns April/May this year, didn't think much of it (I was due for a company medical in November) until I had blood in my semen on several occasions.

Went to a urologist who thought it was probably BPH and put me on Tamsulosin. It didn't have very much effect. He also weanted another PSA test done after three months.

PSA so far:-

March 2005 = 0.67

August 2010 = 3.26

December 2010 = 4.77

Saw the urologist last Monday, he mentioned the possibility of TURP to 'bore out' the prostate, but is rather concerned about the PSA rise (velocity is rather high).

So, I am now due to have a TRUS biopsy on 10th January.

Very scared about the outcome (not too worried about the procedure itself, I had a colonscopy a few years ago - false alarm caused by a doc adding 2 & 2 together and coming up with 5, but better safe than sorry!).

The PSA velocity does seem to point to prostate cancer, I'm wondering if it is genetic from my dad and his bladder cancer?

Not sleeping too well, difficult to get motivated for work.......

BTW, I'm 59 in January.

Any words of wisdom, prayers or kind thoughts very welcome!!!!!

hi sorry to hear how you are feeling ,this is a tough time you are going through,my husband was diagnoised in march this year with prostate cancer his psa was much higher than yours though 121,he went on hormone treatment, and did start radiotherapy although that has had to be stopped at present as he got bad radiation cystitis,so they have stopped it till after christmas, his psa however is now 1.5,so the bit of radiotherapy and hormone treatment he is still on must be working, i no when my hubby was first having problems there are lots of uncertanties goes through your mind, some people do have raised psa and it dosent always mean it is cancer, also prostate cancer is usually slow growing and can be contained for many years, with hormone treatment,if it hasnt gone out of the prostate,it can be removed and even cured, try not to get stressed up about it,my husband kept on about it and talking what if,and it just gets you more stressed,at this moment you dont know,it may be cancer it may not be so try to think positive, when my husband was told we went home and cryed alot then one day he turned round and said well ive got it and the more i worry the worse its going to be,so i think now we have both accepted it, in a strange sort of way also i think something like this makes you appriciate one another more and not take life for granted, take care look after yourself ,and let what ever will be will be love jillxxxx

Thanks for the comments so far.

One good thing is that my son is home for Christmas, so the time to sit and 'stew' is reduced!

Wife knows what is happening and is a great support (30 years of marriage in January and we are still best friends!).

Haven't old the kids yet (I have a daughter who has medical connections) until I know the biopsy results.

    Thanks again,

    Mick

    Hi Mick,

My thoughts are with you and your Dad. All the best and Good Luck with the Biopsy results.

Take care  and be safe Sarsfield.

  • Hi Mick,

Sorry that you seem to be going through the cancer mill like so many of us here, your fears and worries are much the same as mine and others, it seems we share all these common worries to the point of sleepless nights and much more.

Like you i am in my 50s (56) and my father also had bladder cancer and indeed died from it after 6 years and bladder removal, and much more.

I now find that i too have the very same type of bladder cancer as him, so you can imagine what is going through my mind having nursed him to the end, its quite difficult to cope with.

I think the hardest part is all the waiting around for appointments, then further diagnosises, and operations, then the long wait for histology results, the whole affair is so time consuming and puts your whole life on hold and sends it into termoil one way or another.

I have found this site to be a great help once you have found your way around it, you can find the answers to all your questions in one area or another its just a case of looking, or from the many patients who are always around to help out newly diagnosed patients like us, so you have come to the right place.

I wish you all the best, and hope that your results are good, as i found this week they are not always bad.

    seasons greetings.

    Pauli............
