60 not out

1 minute read time.

Hello my macmates long time no write.

Today my beloved Laurence has reached his 60th Birthday, when he was diagnosed in April 08 we didn't know if he would see his 57th birthday.  He's still here with us and relatively well.  This is thanks to the skill and dedication of the team of surgeons, doctors, nurse's, dieticians and speech therapists plus Laurence's spirit and determination.

All our boy's are here at our "Tin Villa" to be with their Dad on his birthday and will take him for a pint.  Tomorrow friends and family will gather and we are having a big BBQ, plenty of food and drink.  We will laugh, joke and enjoy ourselves, You will think this is quite normal. which it is but ours is what I call our abnormal normal !!!!  Let me explain, Laurence lost the whole of his tongue to salivery gland cancer, he cannot eat or drink anything through his mouth.  In fact the last time he ate proper food or drank a pint of beer was the 18th May 2008.  Everything he has now goes through his PEG tube straight into his stomach.  Has that stopped Laurence from going to the pub for a pint or taking us out for meals or having BBQ's?  Not on your nelly it hasn't!.  He takes his 60ml syringe where-ever we go and has a pint.  We once met a couple in an airport bar when we was off on one of our jaunts and they told Laurence that their friend was the same and was totally tube fed, but he wouldn't go out or go on holiday. Laurence replied "well why did he bother letting the surgeons save his life if he isn't going to live it!!!!"  That is why I love him so much.  I have taken early retirement last month so we can have some time together. Like the Landrover ad says "One Life, Live It"  That is exactly what we intend to do, while giving thanks for our abnormal normal life.

What an inspiration! I feel very much the same. Life is for living while we can and although there may be times we feel a bit down that is no different from anyone suffering from the big C or not.

I hope you all enjoy the barbie and have a really good time.

Hi Shezbert - you are an 'old timer' on here like me - I joined in 08 too.

Couldn't agree more with Laurence - even though I'm back on chemo as one of my liver tumours has grown, I'm going on holiday Monday for a week to Spain - luckily it's fallen in the middle of 2 cycles.

Happy birthday to Laurence, and hope you all have a wonderful time xx  Jeanie
