How did I get here?

Less than one minute read time.

Two months ago I was healthy, moderately fit man - cycling to work, running for charity, indoor rowing, and had lost 10kg through a fitness/healthy eating regime. Then I started to have trouble sleeping - after 2~3 hrs I would wake with back ache, sitting up for a few minutes would dissipate the discomfort and I could then go back to sleep. During the day I felt totally normal. The slowly it got worse and especially after eating a big meal and so I went to a chiropractor thinking it to be muscle/skeletal related but when the symptoms started to be felt during the day I decided to register with a doctor and get advice. Thinking back, the symptoms of back ache/pain have been with me for perhaps the last 3 years, and it may all be related. Could I have spotted it earlier? maybe, but it was hard to distinguish from general aches and pains.

    Hi Gregm,

Sorry to hear about your back Problem. We all miss symptoms like aches and pain and put it down to be one of those things . Until they start getting worse . Hindsight is a great thing, but you did the right thing in going and getting something done about it. At least you know now where you stand.

All the best and good luck with your treatment.

Take care and be safe Sarsfield.

  • Hi Gregm

Sorry for what you are going through. As Sarsfield says we all can miss symptoms and hindsight is a wonderful thing for beating ourselves up with "why didn't I or I should have"

I too had back ache for a number of years and put this down to" Nurses back " and accepted it as one of those things. My back ache turned out to be kidney cancer. The symptoms are so vague and often it is only picked up by accident.

Cancer can be so sneaky. My consultant said my tumour had been there for 2 to 3 years. I had,had experience of kidney cancer so I thought I  should have spotted the symptoms sooner but I didn't.

So I doubt you could have spotted it earlier and when alarm bells started to ring you sought out your GP and are now getting the treatment you need.

I hope everything goes well for you I wish you the best of luck

Yep, as the other two have said, cancer has a sneaky way of creeping about without us realising, so no need to beat yourself up about "if only".  It's a natural reaction to the shock of a cancer diagnosis and I myself was walking round for three years with bowel cancer and completely oblivious.  Only when more symptoms crept in was I referred and diagnosed.

So Gregm, now let the battle commence and kick that cancer to hell! Onwards and upwards

    Take care
