Third time unlucky?

1 minute read time.

Hi

I just need to write something to get it off my chest.  I am at work and cannoit concentrate.

Twelve years ago I had ovarian cancer and am fine.  Five years ago I had thyroid cancer and again an fine.  Several weeks ago I experienced some changes in bowel habit, only for a week but long enough to make me think something was not quite right.  To cut a long story short, two weeks ago I had a rigid sigmoidoscopy and because the registrar could not see enough (apparently the suppository had not worked - didn't feel like that to me!) so he asked for a CT scan and colonoscopy and fairly urgently.  I had the CT scan on Friday and have the colonoscopy this Wednesday.  My mind has been going from there is nothing wrong to I have cancer again.

My husband is loving and supportive but this has completely thrown him and he is in such a state and panic about it all.  I can't really talk to him exactly how I feel as I know it will upset him even more and he is so worried now.  Today, it has hit me that something may wellbe wrong and for the first time I am really really worried.  I just hope they can tell me something from the colonscopy onm Wednesday, even if it is not the news I want.  I keep asking myself, why am I having this done so quickly?  It is just belt and braces because of my history or is he really worried.  Brain tells me one thing, stomach says the other!

It sound stragne but I just need to know.  I can face it if it is bad news, done it twice and do it again.

On a moee trivial point, I am very hungry today and tomorrow is going to be worse!  I tried a plain mashed egg sandwich with white bread for lunch, no butter no mayo.  Shan't be having that again, ever!

    Hi Sarah

I hope that the colonoscopy goes well on Wednesday. They should be able to give you an idea of what they find. If there is anything there, they will take a biopsy (completely painless). I would have thought that they would have the result of your CT scan by Wednesday, or at least the doctor should be able to get a verbal report. Don't worry yourself too much (easy to say, I know), but it is good that they are doing something quickly. I had stage 3 bowel cancer (Dukes C) last year and was told I was cured following 6 months of chemo. I'll be keeping everything crossed for you.

    Hi Saran

The CT scan is normally interpreted within a week if you are an outpatient so I suggest popping to your GP so he can look up the report. I hope you are ok. It seems like you have struggled enough already.

Change in bowel history is due to a lot of things, but i guess with your previous history its something that should be ruled out. Colonoscopy lookes at the whole colon, however a flexi only looks at the sigmoid colon.

Keep the faith and keep us informed. Thinking of you
