Vocal chord cancerous tumour removed in USA in two hours.

Less than one minute read time.

I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on my larynx last june (2009). I was booked in to have 20 sessions of radiotherapy in Cheltenham.

I searched the net for vocal chord cancer and found a Dr Zeitels in Boston, Mass, who used a KTP potassium laser to remove tumours from this area.

I went to Boston, was examined, the next day operated on. Two hour operation removed the tumour. No after pain, slight soreness for around a week.

Voice OK. His clinic only deals with voice problems.

The only drawback was the expense, around £15,000.

Had checkups here since every month, no problems.

Whilst there met Dutch doctor who was going to set up operation in Holland.

I don.t understand why this system isnt used here, on a conveyer belt system the money and time saved for the NHS would be appreciable.

How typical of the NHS.  A total lack of any real desire to implement treatments in use with proven success elsewhere in the world.  If it hasn’t been tested in a NICE approved randomised trial, then UK medicine doesn’t want to know.

Best wishes for many more cancer free years

    Dear Rodney,

I would like if you wish to read my profile. I have had the same as you only my Cancer was very aggressive. The Cancer spread to my oesophagus and Thyroid as well as my Larynx the lot was removed in an operation that lasted 7 and a half hours. and after that a course of 36 radio treatments that was in Feb 1999. I know im in remission and I also know the Cancer is still ther but inactive at this time> But that it will be back dont know where when or how, but it will get me in the end. There are people on this site who have gone throught the same proceedure.and have come and gone. I hope your remission time is a long and happy one.

You take care and be safe Sarsfield. Stay Positive.!!

    Hi Graeme,

Rodney was very lucky they caught it early and only one cord was damaged, the thing that would worry me is if it was a sucess as they say,and for Rodneys sake I hope it was. Why does he have to go back every month for a check up. As for the NHS

not everybody can afford £15000 for a Partial Op. and they just cant afford it. Sorry but thats my opinion.

Take care and be safe Sarsfield.
