Oesophagectomy post-op support

1 minute read time.

Although I seem to have arrived at a reasonable state 16 months after my operation for Cancer of the Oesophagus (Gullet), I still feel a need to make contact with others who have experienced the same, or similar, operation. I live in Pevensey Bay and was operated on in Brighton. Of course none of the Professionals could guide me towards other patients, so I have sort of been left to get on with it. There is a newly formed Oesophageal Patients Association for the Sussex Coast but it only meets quarterly. My need for contact has been for a bit more than four times a year, (or less, if I don't feel well on the meeting date) It's a bit like "Is there anyone out there?" I'm so unused to using a computer in this way that I'm not even certain if this really reaches anyone. I guess I will just wait and see. I am probably one of the 'lucky' ones inasmuch that my Cancer was spotted at a very early stage because of a routine endoscopy and biopsy. I had Barretts Oesophagus which has a significant chance of becoming cancerous. I had been told a couple of years ago that regular endoscopy checks were being discontinued. I asked for my checks to continue for which I am now rather pleased. The Cancer would have much further progressed before I became aware. I did respond to someone asking about dilations.(well I think I responded!) I'm the guy with 21 of them under my belt! I did ask if they give you a badge after 20 but somehow they missed the joke! I won't go on, it might get boring.

    Hi

I'm 6 months post op, "Ivor Lewis" didn't know about Barrats. My indigestion stopped about two years ago, i never thought any thing of this? Then started having hiccups after each meal, Collapsed  at work in April  this year. Diagnosed the same month. Up to now i can eat most things but smaller portions.Having dumping syndrom some times. Stomach cramp as well but luckly swallowing is not now a problem? Is that some thing to look forward to? You'll find lots of info through this site. How are you at  maintaining your weight? Contact Crystalclear she's very informative.

    All the best tony d

  • Hi Peter

Welcome to the community and I’m glad to hear that your recovery is going well 16 months post surgery.  I too had an oesophagectomy (Ivor Lewis) so I know that recovery is quite a lengthy and difficult journey sometimes, and does have its setbacks from time to time.  Even now, two and a half years after my surgery, I still have side effects but am ever hopeful that these will improve in time.  What surgical procedure did you have?  It’s incredible that you’ve needed 21 dilations as that must be so debilitating and I feel so sorry for you that it’s been necessary.  I speak to many people who have had this surgery and all have the need to have contact with others to share their experiences and compare notes.  It really does help us all, so you’ve come to the right place here.  I see you’ve joined the oesophageal group but I’m not sure if you’ve posted there yet.  There are many people there, both patients and carers, at various stages of treatments so I feel sure that if you join one of the discussions you’ll find some support there.  Anyway Peter, we all wear the same tshirt but you must be the only one with a badge for 21 dilations!  It sounds like the cub scouts doesn’t it Lol?  I hope this evening finds you well and hope to hear from you again, perhaps within the group.

    Crystal xx
