A balancing act

A balancing act

Not the circus type of balancing act unfortunately, but trying to manage the impacts of various drugs in my body on the days around my 3 weekly chemo treatment.

First the steroids, 4 tablets with both breakfast and lunch the day before, 4 with breakfast and 2 with lunch on treatment day, and 2 at breakfast, 2 at lunch the day after!

Then Omeprazole (for heartburn) usually every day for the whole time, but now morning and bedtime from the day before treatment until I think I can stop one.

The treatment itself comprises of 1 anti sickness IV, 2 chemo drugs, Herceptin and a Hormone drug (as my lump is oestrogen positive!) and takes around 6 hours.

Anti sickness meds start at bedtime the night of treatment, again until I decide I am no longer nauseous.

And the dreaded self injection which aims to boost my immune system and blood count. the nurse gave me a lesson on this today, see earlier post!

So if that wasn't enough to cope with, these various drugs have conflicting side effects, namely Messrs Diarrhoea and Constipation are fighting the battle of the galaxies in my stomach. So, it's a careful judgment - Imodium or Laxido??  Getting that wrong can literally have an explosive impact!

Oh and don't forget the antihistamine, recommended to combat the continuous runny nose, and saves me from having to buy shares in Kleenex!

And finally, the data analytics team at Apple must be having a field day. My resting heart rate from the Apple Watch has swung from 58 to 86 and anywhere in between this month! Crazy stuff, you do wonder what all these drugs are doing, but as long as it's working, which it seems to be!

On the positive side, remembering all this keeps me busy Grinning

  • Blimey, how do you remember medication times! Like you haven't got enough lol...my official name could be Superdrug next time! Lol

May I ask if you were given those for the side effects by nurses or did you ask for them? How do you balance the Diarrhoea and Constipation? Coz you already drink so much water too and surely that helps the stool. TmI- apologies... Oh dear!

Like you I probably will be big on the anti sickness. I get travel sickness and I heard also HP gives some flu-ish symptoms like achy joints. I will try to keep active but with immunity low I don't want to leave the house...so far breathing/dance exercises on you tube is keeping me busy!
