Macmillan Takeover 2018

3 minute read time.

On Thursday, the 12th July, our annual fundraising event, MacmillanTakeover, took place across the streets of London. In this blog, Editor Amy will talk about what Macmillan Takeover is and how the money we raised can make a difference.

What is Macmillan Takeover, I hear you ask? On one day every year, the Metropolitan Police grant Macmillan staff permission to fundraise and bucket collect for Macmillan in various locations across Greater London. It's known as Mac Takeover.

Mac Takeover is not only a great excuse for us to get away from our desks, but also provides Macmillan staff with the opportunity to inspire even more people to get involved. It’s extremely rewarding for us to be able to talk with members of the public about their Macmillan experiences and how we have helped them.

It can feel like throwing a pound here and there in a collection bucket doesn’t amount to much. But your money adds up and goes a really long way when it comes to our cancer information:

  • Just £5 can help pay for 14 copies of our booklet, The cancer guide. This booklet can help someone recently diagnosed with cancer and their families, and understand more about cancer, its treatment, and the help available.
  • £7 can pay for 10 copies of our most popular booklet, Help with the cost of cancer. This helps people affected by cancer understand the benefits and financial help they could access
  • £9 can pay for 25 copies of our booklet, Coping with fatigue, which is our second most ordered resource.

Your donations also go towards our Macmillan Cancer Information and Support centres across the UK, where we provide all of our cancer information and signpost to relevant local support services.

This year, the Cancer Information Development team could be found in not one, but two London hot spots raising money. Some of us were collecting outside Warren Street station and some were positioned in the Farringdon Road/Kings Cross area. We were armed with our green wigs, shirts, glitter and tutus ready to turn London green.

Here are some snippets of what our team got up to on the day.

Editors Helena and Amy-Louise greeted the early morning rush hour commuters with some cheery signs, glitter and wigs!

Content Channel Editors Anil, Katy, Stu, Lindsey and Information Development Nurse Teri took over the streets of Farringdon with their feather boas and tutus!

Senior Information Development Nurse Sue and Senior Editor Marilisa were also out and about with that Mac Takeover feeling.

Editorial Assistant Helen and Editor Sofiane started and ended their shift with a glowing smile from ear to ear ready to greet the public!

Managing Editor Emma and Content Developer Ella with not a bleary eye in sight as they started their 8am Farringdon shift – look how great they look! We particularly love Ella’s flower crown.

Here are two of our Information Development Nurses, Tracy and Teri. They write our amazing information booklets and make sure that our cancer information is accurate and reliable. We think they’re incredible! We also think they look particularly fetching in green...

Did you spot any of our staff members during Macmillan takeover day? Leave us a comment below telling us where. Thank you all for your support!
