    Hello Nellie,

Ive had my laryngectomy for 11 yrs past, if its any consolation it has its ups and downs.

In my case I was like your mum a full larnyngectomy,it was an aggressive Concer, which  left me with no voice ,unable to taste or smell.

But that was a long time ago and i have got used to it.If your MUMs cancer was not aggressive you may find that things may not be that bad,

Now a days they have valves they can put into the stoma and conect to the osophagus which is very good for speech,it is called a Servox Digital, she should also be able to smell and eat.

I wish you and your Mum the very best of luck.

    Take care and be safe.

Let me know how your Mum gets on.

    Regards Sarsfield.xx

hi dont know if you remember me i have not had a pc for months so nice to get back on my laptop i lost my taste for around 6 months then it came back i have a great oesphageal my wife loves it when i chat to her on the phone with my gruff voice.i was told to use my nebuliser everyday but i use it once a week and ive been doing that since my op.my big problem is work as i am still only 44 and ive never worked since my op.i used to be a lorry driver but nobody will employ me now the reason i believe is if i became ill while employed .they may think i will try an sue them as we have an open wound its just a thought hope its not me being negative.also i am on incompacity benifet if i go into the local job centre my benifet will be cut by £31 per week as would go onto job seekers allowance so its seems unfair as i would jump at the chance to work full time again.also as am still a young guy it cab be lonely some times as we dont speak so well people get the wrong impression and kinda think i am some kind of person with learning diffuculties as i dont speak like other people.going to the pub nobody will make conversation i know this is the negative side of a larry well my opinion but there is always positive sides.all larngectomees are intitled to a bus pass i do a little fishing the liecence is half price often when in the pub with my mates and if its busy as of my voice is quite n gruff nearly always some one will get you a drink as the barman wont hear you.colds can be a awfull time ive been up for 3 nights as having breathing diffuculties then thats a good time to use the nebby 4 or 5 a day often when having a bad cold when coughing often blood appears but this seems to be natural.be very carefull on the beach as sand is very fine and it will make you cough an cough allways keep your stoma well coverd in the wind as this can cause a chest infection which isant pleasant.allso be carefull when its very sunny as i met a lady who got her stoma sunburnt that must of been awfull.be carefull of deodrants bleach all strong house hold chemicals will cause a sore chest and when coughing its very painfull i cope well now but it did take a year to get the hang of things look at me going on take care a laryngectomee is not the end of the world by sydney norgate its worth reading take care      rick
