Temps and BP Going Up

Less than one minute read time.

Well Sal is now on IV Tazocin, an industrial strength antibiotic as her neutrophil count is 0.0! Her temp is still high and BP now high too.

The oncologist is surprise that her count is so low. It doesn't normally go to zero and it is 2-3 days earlier than normal too. He is talking about lowering the doxorubicin dose next time... or even dropping it altogether. Apparently, there are some trials in the USA that suggest that the outcomes of TAC vs TC are similar making the A (Adriamycin or doxorubicin) possibly unnecessary. I am sure we will talk about this again.

In the meantime, Sal is on "close watch" and I hope that the Tazocin keeps those nasty infections at bay until her counts come up... could be several days yet.

Not sure if this helps, but just to say that my sister wet through this with 0 neutrophils ( we weren't actually told this till she was on the mend) & non-existent BP. It was pretty scary as we had been through the odd low count, but never a zero & this was when swine flu was on the rounds. It took a week in hospital - 2 of them days in the A& E as they couldn't be bothered to ring the cancer ward who would have found her a bed. After about the 3rd Tax she seemed to 'manage' ok (by that I mean no trips to the hospital). Must admit I had to sneak in cooked broccoli/ home grown potatoes & chicken in a flask for her as the food was awful and this seemed to boost her up a bit.

Take care and do look after yourself as well.

Thanks Jewels, yes, that is a big help. You are right about the food. Just when she has no taste they feed her food that is so inpalatable. She has just nibbled at it.

The oncologist has said that it is the doxorubicin rather than the Tax but it could be both I suppose. Did your sister have the same dose on her 2nd and 3rd cycle or did they reduce it?

Paul - they didn't reduce the Tax, but changed the Nulastin injections and tweaked other medication. Sorry, but my head was so full of everything at the time I couldn't take all the medication details in. After the 3rd cycle she 'sailed' through it - still knocked her out and she got very depressed, but once she read the depression was chemically induced she rallied around & fought back. She is organic (most of the time) and lives on juiced fruit & veg concotions - did eat carefully on the Tax as we were warned no uncooked / unpasteurised food as the immune system is depressed so much by this stuff. There is light at the end of the tunnel & she puts me to shame now with her energy. Just changed jobs and her art is on display at the gallery.
