Chemo 2 Done - All OK

1 minute read time.

Sal's chemo 2 went quite well today although the Hickman line played up a bit. It seems to work only when she is in a certain position. Coughing, moving arms, breathing heavily etc didn't really work but if she sat upright and wiggled her legs then it worked well! As has been suggested in some of the comments, the line did allow blood to be drawn today. It looks like we have to be thankful when it works and accepting of the situation when it doesn't.

Sal is feeling quite tired today and has a flushed face (no temperature) but no other effects at the moment.

I had confirmation today that no one will be available to care for Sal's line locally... they are not able to get any training done at short notice. So it is a visit to hospital twice a week until I get trained up. It isn't a show stopper but it does mean that Sal must be well enough to travel twice a week and that might be difficult at times. I will report more on this when I get trained up.

Sal had just Taxotare and cyclophosphamide today. They have dropped the Adriamycin to help prevent her severe neutropenia reoccuring. They have also dropped all antibiotics on days 5-9 so she will have to be even more careful not to get an infection. Mind you, her blood counts are currently superb and much better than at the start of chemo 1.

This is a good start today to chemo 2.

    Hi to you both,

So glad that the 2nd chemo went well. You would be really lucky if you never had any "hiccups" during treatment but having a supportive partner like you makes all the difference. My husband cooks the evening meal every night and accompanies me to every hospital appointment and chemo session . He is willing to turn his hand to anything while still holding down a full-time job.

I think it is great that you are prepared to train to flush Sals line and I am glad that her blood counts are so good. Hopefully things will go smoothly in the weeks ahead.

Very best wishes to you both,

                                    Love lizzie xx

Good morning to you both.  Glad 2nd chemo went okay so far.  In view of Sal's rocky start to this regime I must say I am so angry that you have to travel with her to hospital twice a week to get her line flushed - we all know about bugs etc., on bushes, trains, hospital grounds!!!  Just hurry up and get trained up Mr. Sal and don't be afraid to push this - Sal needs a good minder right now!  Hope the weekend goes well for you both and at least the sun is going to shine sometimes - a bit warmer too!  Ann

hello, just to say i have a hickman line, and at 1st it does seem a bit much all the things you have to do to flush the line, like youre situation we couldnt get anyone to come out and do my line, because no district nurses in my area knew how to do them, and then it would have been less hassle and less chance of infections if we did it ourselves... so my mum trained up to do it... and then towards the end i did it myself...  im having mine out 2day after nearly 7 months with it in.. so its a great relief... mine used to play up as well.... wouldnt never draw back blood, and sometimes was positional, they had me hanging upside down off the bed!! haa!! the things they do hey!! =)

Thanks for your comments and it is great to hear your comments. :-)

I will speak to our Vascular Access Team to see what is the best way for me to get trained in flushing.

Good luck emziee01. We both hope your removal goes well. I bet you are looking forward 2day!
