Acid Reflux

1 minute read time.

Will it ever end? Sal had a bad day again today with severe acid reflux. Doubled up again. She had told the doc and nurses that she is prone to acid reflux and has a regular prescription of Lansoprazole but they forgot to put it on her drugs sheet and the nurses can't give a drug if it is not on the sheet and it needs a doctor signature to go on the sheet. The upshot was that Sal never got any last night or this morning and this was the result. This afternoon the nurse gave her some regardless and that combined with a glass of milk it calmed it down somewhat.

It seems as soon as one thing is resolved then something else crops up. I don't know how we will cope with this kind of onslaught, particularly Sal. She seems to be in constant pain with things that aren't the cancer or chemo... it has always been something rather peripheral. Very annoying, frustrating and EXHAUSTING!

I hope to visit her this evening but she was asleep most of the afternoon so she may not want me around if she feels rough. I hope she doesn't watch the debate on TV this evening - might make her feel worse!!!

Thanks lal. I am a little concerned because I can't see why this might be happening. It is 9 days after chemo cycle 1 now so it probably wouldn't be the chemo itself would it? Sorry, I realise no one can tell me that on a blog! But it is a question I have in my mind... there must be something else...

I did think it might be that the strong antibiotics had killed off her gut flora and so her gut is not able to function properly but the doctors haven't suggested that.

I hope she starts to get better soon. This first chemo is really taking it out her... and me also!

HI, just been reading through your blog about Sal, really sorry to hear she's having such a bad time of it.

Not sure if it helps, but I also need lansoporzole with my chemo. For me it's the side effect of the dexamethesone steroid that causes the aggrevates the acid reflux.

Taxol also "stripped" the lining from my mouth all the way through to the other end, Not pleasent and something which felt similar (I imagine) to having drunk paint stripper. Makes everything feel a bit delicate to say the least and ten times worse if being "attacked" by our body's natural acids.

Each of us are different though and as my consultant has said, balancing the meds to combat side effects really isn't an exact science. Each cycle can be different and meds could need adjusting. So don't give up hope. They will get the balance right.
