Mum slept most of day! (Also please pray for wee Charly!)

2 minute read time.

My mum and I were up at 4.45am this morning.  Long story but our neighbour has dementia and decided he would pay us a visit, bless him, very sad!  Anyway after we got him back indoors, he was in the street in his PJs, mum went back to bed and slep until around 11am.  I didn't go into work as when Bill starts wandering he needs watching and he has no family near by.  She got up at 11am and was back in bed by 11.45am.  She then slept until I woke her at 1pm because we had an emergency appointment with the oncologist this afternoon.  By 3pm she was back in bed and slept until 6.30pm.  She has just gone back to bed at 10pm and was spark out by 10.05pm!

The oncologist is not unduly concerned with the symptoms mum is presenting with.  The extreme tiredness and difficulty/severe pain when swallowing are common side effects of the RT.  He is unsure of why she has been confused but thinks this may be due to the messing about with the MST which has now been sorted coupled with the extreme tiredness making her groggy and confused.  When I think about it sometimes if I'm really tired when I get up I do crazy things like put the kettle in the fridge!!  So he may be right.  He has put her back on steroids for another few weeks and has given her these in liquid form.  He has also given her liquid paracetamol.  He has also given her loperanazole and tomorrow I have to go to Preston for something else that will anaestitise her oesophagus before she eats and should sooth her.  Seemingly he can only dispense this from Preston where he is based as they don't have it at Blackburn (poor relation obviously).  I don't mind going over there if it helps so I'm seeing him at 11am, another morning off work, just as well I have a good boss!

So that's mum, she is extremely tired and struggling to eat because of the pain but has picked up since the MST has been reduced, very little shaking, steadier on her feet and slightly less confused.

Now to Charly Johns.  7 years old and fighting to beat this terrible disease.  A lot of you will know Anna from chat but many of you may not so I thought I'd leave a link to her page so you could take a look and maybe leave a message for Charly, Anna and the family.  I won't go into details but Anna has asked for everyone to pray for Charly as she is so very poorly at the moment.  Please take a look at her website and if you pray, please pray for this beautiful, inspirational wee girl who has so much to live for. Glad you are getting the help that your Mum deserves - all down to your efforts. Imagine if you weren't there to keep an eye on things, or just "accepted" what the GP's said!

If your Mum has the really sore throat that can be a part of RT you may like to try Difflam mouthwash - either as a gargle or it can also be bought as a throat spray. It is available over the counter and I found it really helpful.

Fingers crossed that your Mum starts to pick up and you can take advantage of this half term break :)

Hi Caroline, it comes as no surprise that you are doing all you can to help your mum as this has always been the case.  I do hope that the rest and different medication will help her and that she's able to enjoy the nice weather  we've been promised after the Bank Holiday ! I will pray for Charly and her family and hope that you too will be able to rest a litle over half term. Big hugs to you and your Mum x
