5 days since end of RT and mum not in good form!

1 minute read time.

Mum finished her RT on Monday and is feeling a lot worse 5 days on than she did when she was having the treatment.  Her hair is now coming out in chunks just when she'd reached the stage when it had come back enough for her to feel confident around the house without anything on her head.  The pain she is experiencing when eating and, particularly, drinking hot tea has increased each day and now wakes her up as her chest and back are so painful even when not eating.  This has resulted in her MST which had just been reduced to 20mg at night and 10mg in the morning to 30mg night and morning.

This morning she got up at 8am to take her pills, get her cream on and have her breakfast before taking her after breakfast pills.  She was extremely shaky and seemed a bit confused, forgetting which pills were which, forgetting she'd taken them 5 minutes later and going to take them again and repeating things she'd already said.  I find this very upsetting.

At 9am she told me she was sick of everything and headed back to bed.  I have done all the housework, hoovering included, and she's not stirred.  She is out cold and it's now 12.10pm.  Hopefully when she does wake up she will feel better and we will be able to get out for an hour or so and do some shopping.

I feel so sorry for her.  Most of the time she is upbeat and positive but occasionally the act slips and I see her vulnerability come to the fore.  I know she just wasn't expecting this level of side effects from the RT because the chem had gone relatively side effect free and so this has thrown her.  I think her hair coming out again has just knocked her for 6, it was always the big issue from day 1.

She has had not had normality (what ever that is) for more than 6 months now and I pray that she gets some in the very near future.

Your poor Mum. I know how horrible it is  as I recently finished RT to the chest - twice a day for three weeks - and it is very painful. They told me that it could get worse for 2 weeks after treatment, but I found it started to improve quite a lot by then. I also found RT very tiring and it made me rather low, but not for too long. I really missed my cuppa, especially as I hate cold tea.

Have they given her anything to help? I found Oramorph useful just before eating, though about all I could manage easily was ice cream - very soothing. It is miserable while it lasts, but it WILL improve, especially with lots of rest and plenty of protein to help repair things. Tell her to hang on in there - it is the last hurdle.

    Best Wishes

Hope your Mum picks up soon - and look after yourself as well, I know how hard it is to watch this happening. Val X
