Background

Less than one minute read time.

From doctors discussing my illness over and over again, between Birmingham and the Marsden, they have finally made a decision on how to treat my melanoma tumours.  I have 2 tumours at present, one behind my breastbone, which is growing and very painfull, and one below my right kidney.  The plan of attack is to use radiotherapy for 3 weeks on my breastbone tumour, then an operation on my kidney tumour.  So start radiotherapy next Tuesday (23/02/10) for three weeks.  Hopefully keeping a diary will help me deal with my thoughts before, during and after, and maybe anyone else out there about to head down the same round.

At the moment I'm happy that something is being done and we have a plan.  I know it's not going to make it go away, or change the outcome.  But hopefully it will get rid of the pain for a bit.

Hi Charley - I have different cancer but have involvement (tumours) behind the breast bone - I have had radiotherapy twice once on the sternal area and once on the mediasternum - the mediasternal one gave me severe heartburn and swallowing difficulties and lasted for a while - I found Mucogel (available on prescrition and also over the counter) was really helpful - so if you get problems swallowing and cant get to see a doctor I suggest you invest in a bottle!! Hope rt isnt too draining for you - the effects can lat for a good while (peak activity 6 weeks from begining rt) so pace yourself and dont fill your days up too much. Good luck Jools xxx (P.S. both times the rt worked very well!)
