a ray of light maybe

Less than one minute read time.

So today Dad had his appointment with the oncologist. She told him that he has squamous cell carcinoma in his lung with lung secondaries and a 'spot' in his right shoulder. He starts treatment next week, with 5 sessions of radiotherapy, followed by chemo two weeks later.

He seems so much brighter today, knowing it is worth, in his words 'giving it a go'. He is prepared to fight, and I am so glad he still has that fighting spirit.

The radiotherapy will (hopefully) shrink the tumour in his lung which will help with his breathlessness and cough and the 'blast' of radiotherapy to his shoulder should help there too.

He and Mum will be able to go on holiday, and the team are willing to work the chemo round any break they choose to have, which is wonderful.

Dad is delighted that the chemo he will be having may not cause him to lose his hair, he is so vain and this makes us laugh.

So on the whole, a better and more positive day. We know it wont be cured, but there is a little ray of hope which we can cling on to. Thank God.

    Hi Jo

thats good news and good to hear your dad is being positive, my dad has just had his 1st session of chemo over a week ago, it wiped him out and all he could do was lie on the sofa for 3 days, I suppose when they'r used to being active it's easy to give up. My mum also has a fighting spirit and is coping really well, but as she says " whats the alternative" so every now and then she gives him a "kick up the backside" (a talking to) and it seems to do the trick, hope all goes well, take care Susan x

Thank you everyone. I can't believe how much comfort I get when I turn on the computer and see these messages of hope and good wishes.

My Dad had a baseline scan today, and is going next Wednesday for the first session of radiotherapy. I will be there to support both him and Mum (who seems to have taken a back seat since Dad's diagnosis)

I need to remember  I have two parents, both of whom need support and also that Sunday is Mother's day. I will make such a fuss of my darling Mum on Sunday, whilst being there for Dad too.

    Will keep posting.
