My Dad

Less than one minute read time.

Hi All,

My father is having his first chemo today for spine cancer. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago, but it has now advance to his spine. He is 79 years old, not particularly frail but he is very scared.

I live miles away from him - him in Norfolk and me in Surrey. There is no one to care for him except me. I have talked to him about having his treatment and staying with me, but he is concerned that this won't be possible. I am quite desperate to find a solution for his care...ideally for him to be treated locally to me.

I would of course go to him, but I have children, am a single mum and the only person that works to bring in money to the house, so can't risk my job.

If anyone has any experience in this I would be grateful for your knowledge.

Thanks

Vicky

    Hi Vicky,

Welcome to the Online Community. I'm so sorry to hear that your dad's cancer has advanced, and about the difficulty you're having in sorting out his care. It can be really difficult when a loved one with cancer lives a long way from you.

A good first step would be to give our team of experts a call on the Macmillan Support Line (0808 808 0000, Mon-Fri, 9am-8pm, free from landlines and most mobile networks). They can help you find options for your dad's care - and they are also there to listen if you need to offload.

I hope that it's helped a bit to share your feelings here on your blog. If you are looking for answers from people with similar experiences, I would also recommend joining some groups that are relevant to you. Groups on this site are a way of bringing people together based on similar experiences. If you join some groups and post a new discussion in those groups, you should get some really supportive responses.

Here are some groups you may be interested in:

    Carers Only

    Secondary bone cancer

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions about using the community site, you can email me on community@macmillan.org.uk.

Well, my lovely Dad just had his first chemo today... I called him to ask how it went. He said "well darling, it was quite pleasant, the nurse was so lovely and new everything, plus we had ham and tomato sandwiches".... Called later (just now) and he is fine and happy, not scared anymore.
