Chemo cycle 2: Day 2-3

1 minute read time.

The main symptom has been tiredness really, I seem to be okay in the few days following the treatment but...

Yesterday (Day 3) I noticed that the soreness from the chemo on my arm was still there and that my arm was covered in pinky blotches, a bit like a rash.  DH had noticed them an hour or so after the chemo on Day 1, but I hadn't really given it much thought thinking it would go away.  But I thought 48h was enough, so phoned the helpline who told me to go to A&E.  Oh the joy.  Luckily DH is working at home this week so could take me and thank goodness a friend was able to collect DD2 from nursery and her husband was at home to take DD1.  So it all worked out.

The A&E doctor didn't fill me with much confidence though.  He asked what chemo I was having, I said FEC and he started to write 'effycee' or something!  He said he had never heard of it.  But he diagnosed an infection in my vein - fibulosis or something? - and I am on antibiotics for the next 5 days.  It's already going down so hopefully he was right....

Hello xaulleo, just read your blog.  I hope you don't mind me writing to you but the a&e reception you had doesn't fill me with much confidence.  The most important thing to look out for during chemo is any sign of infection at all.  I was treated by Barts and had a number to call at the ward on Barts should my temp. or any sign of infection appear.  I hope you have been given the right antibiotics - if your temperature goes up over the weekend please don't just sit and see - if you have a contact number please call them.  I sincerely hope your fec goes according to plan and you get over this hopefull tiny hitch.  Good luck, keep well, and keep taking your temperature during the weekend.  Please keep us all informed how you get on.  Ann xx

hello xaulleo, i tend to agee with nutcracker. a and e is not really the place to contact you should have contact numbers for the hospital you are being treated at. i am on ecx and i feel ok for 1st few days then i get completely knackered for 2 weeks. i too get problems with arm i get treatment in and have developed phlebitis which i suspect is what you have. my consultant  has advised having treatment in alternate arms and i have found that the affected arm has recovered because of this. hope this has been useful to you. good luck take care, sue

Thanks both.  I was actually advised to go to the local A&E by my oncologist (via the nurse at the end of the contact number where I'm being treated), so I presume they knew what they were doing!  I will definitely monitor my temperature though.  However saying that, the rash is definitely going although the soreness is still there when I stretch my arm.

Unfortunately due to having lymph glands removed during my masectomy, I don't think they are able to use that arm, so I do only really have the one.  Complete pain but there you go.

Arm's hurting a lot less this morning and  I can hardly see the rash, no temperature.  So let's hope the A&E doctor wasn't as incompentent as I fear!!
