There have been a few firsts for me in the last week. It started with Saturday night when I managed to stay up past my usual bedtime of 10pm for the first time. Husband and I watched the England v Italy game and I stayed awake until 1am. Of course I ended up wishing I hadn’t bothered when England lost!
This week has been my first break from work since I went back in January. I don’t usually manage to use up all my holiday entitlement, but I have had a telling off from my Oncologist, so my annual leave is now all booked up. Last year when I was travelling backward and forward to the hospital for my treatment we drove past several tourist attractions. When I was so weary towards the end I couldn’t imagine I would ever be fit enough to visit any of them, so it felt really good on Monday morning when we arrived at the local bird sanctuary. It all went very well apart from me managing to get bitten by a parrot. We walked round for two hours before I needed a sit down.
I also managed to walk the three mile round trip to a duck pond this week. I had been tipped off about some baby ducks but unfortunately they were all fast asleep when we got there. But I enjoyed the walk and it was the first time I’d managed to walk so far.
Today we have been out for our first meal since my treatment. We went back to our favourite restaurant. Last year we went there on the way home from the hospital after having the CT scan. We also visited on the day I had my pre-assessment for the biopsy operation. It was lovely to walk back in today and sit down at our favourite table. I chose sausage and mash with onions and peas as it came with a little individual jug of gravy. I was very pleased to be able to eat most of it, I just left a few peas and Husband ate one of the sausages. Husband remarked on of all those months of tube feeding and said there were times he couldn’t imagine me ever tucking into a meal again. I agreed that there were many times when I couldn’t imagine it either.
I’ve been watching some of the football with Husband and for the first time I haven’t been bored. We have been having a little bet on the games and I find it makes it much more exciting. We’ve been doing predict the score bets and I was very chuffed to get the Spain v Chile score correct at the odds of 33/1. I’m doing better than Husband and so far I’ve won more than I’ve staked. Shame the England team haven’t been more successful. I think I read it’s the first time they haven’t progressed from the group, that’s the only first that I didn’t enjoy this week!
