Painful Eating After Radical Radiotherapy

Less than one minute read time.
Hello, my name is Helen and I am fiance to Bob who has Lung Cancer and has just come through the side effects of radical radiotherapy. During that time eating was absolute agony for him and in his words "like swallowing razor blades". I am going to post on here all the tips, information and recipes I found out to help him eat 2200 calories a day when on some days he couldnt even swallow his own spit. Am off to work now but will be back with some helpful ideas on how to boost the calories with minimal food. Take care everyone best wishes to all.

    Hi Helen and Bob.

I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy for lung cancer and could have committed  Hari Kari with the pain.....until I told the dept and they gave me two bottles of Antepsin Suspension. It worked so well, for me, that only about a half bottle was used.

Hope this helps, it was 'swallow his own spit' that got my attention, I thought I had invented those words!

    Sincerely,

    Angela

Thanks for that about the suspension you had prescribed, we didnt come across that one - Bob had oralmorph a type of morphine and has just come back from the hospital today with another bottle to help with the pain (he now has an inflammed lung).  He wasnt given that in the beginning - they said ibuprofen, solpadeine etc and prescribed him boxes of the stuff.  It was only when he practically begged for something stronger that they gave him Morphine.  The pain was so intense straight from the beginning I dont know why they just didnt give him Morphine straight away as it would have saved him weeks of pain.  "cant swallow his own spit" seemed the only way he could described it for me and the description works!   I do feel that the doctors didnt prepare us enough for the pain.  We were told "there will be some pain as a side effect of the radiotherapy" and that was it - no way did we think it would be as bad as it was.  But thankfully, Bob has come through the worst now (I hope) and his appetite/eating has returned with a vengance.
