...and yet more cancer

Less than one minute read time.

Have blogged on here only a few times really just giving updates on my nephew's cancer fight.  He is currently in remission from synovial sarcoma and doing really well.  Yesterday my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Contained (hopefully) but a 9 on the gleason scale so aggressive.  We are all in a state of shock that cancer is, once again, invading the family.  The last 18 months have been extremely difficult for Mum and Dad who had to see their darling grandson (12 years old today) go through so much.  It seems so unfair now that Dad has to fight his own battle with this awful disease.  He is to have scans soon to determine any spread and then hormone therapy has been suggested, apparently surgery is not a good idea for him because of the aggressiveness - does anyone know why?  I think he would rather it was all taken away surgically but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Would appreciate any advice or information.  I have looked at various sites and I know the information is out there but would just like to hear from anyone who is or knows someone going through this.

Hi Meredith - so sorry that this rotten disease is affecting you all again - it just doesn't give some people a break, does it?

My dad has prostate cancer about 6 or 7 years ago, but don't think it was a very aggressive type. Anyway, he had some form of 'drip' radiotherapy, which was quite new at the time - and he has been fine ever since. But obviously there are many different types of prostate cancer.

I'm glad your nephew is doing well, let's hope your dad does well, also. Love jeanie x

Hi Meredith - Sorry to hear your news.

My dad has prostate cancer diagnosed 9 years ago of Gleason 9 aggresive type too.  He underwent radiotherapy and has been on and off hormone treatment.  The hormones seem to work and bring his PSA blood test down so he comes off them for a time and then he will have another blood test which shows it has risen again so goes back on hormone treatment.  He is on 6 monthly reviews now and seems to be doing really well.  He often has down days though especially following the results of his blood test if there is a change but soon picks himself up with our support.  He is more worried about me at the moment as i had part of my kidney removed in September for cancer and have had MRI and CT scan to see if they have got it all.  I go for my results on the 10th Feb so we have everything crossed.

It is a shock when it hits your family more than once but i have found it has brought us all closer together especially for Dad and me as i now know how he feels and we can share things that sometimes upset the rest of the family.

I hope this is of some help to you and your dad to know that my dad is still fit and active after 9 years.

    Love

    Gillx

Thank you both so much for your replies.  Jeanie - I have read all your blogs and send my love to both you and your son and hope you remain well.  Gill - sorry to hear of your own cancer battle and all crossed for the results in Feb.

The reality is all sinking in a bit more several days down the line.  Mum and Dad were very upbeat on the day of his diagnosis but then crashed down that evening and, as Mum said, 'we got all our crying out of the way and are now going to get on with it'

Scans will now determine the treatment and apparently surgery hasn't yet been totally ruled out.  Whatever - it's another damn cancer journey but we will all be there for him.
