Chemo - round one

1 minute read time.

So the oncologist decided to put me on an accelerated protocol of 4 doses of EC over 8 weeks followed by 12 doses of paxataxil (I know this is the wrong spelling) over 12 weeks.

The first dose was on 18th June which went well - just the side effects to look forward to!

I feel I got off lightly with the nausea, presumably thanks to the meds I was sent home with. Got awful acid indigestion though :-(

Day 5 and 6 were pretty awful with quite a bit of pain which set me back a bit mentally but everything wore off by day 7 and things were looking up.

Then I had my one week review call - well it all went downhill from there!

To put this next bit into context, my oncologist does not like her patients to check their temperature unless they actually feel ill so I had just been checking every couple of days at best.

During the call I was asked to check my temperature and it was 37.9 - next thing I know I get to spend 4 nights in hospital with a high temperature and neutropenia. Felt a proper fraud as I felt perfectly fine. The stay in hospital also made me realise that at the age of 46 I am quite young to be going through this, everyone else in the 5 bed bay was over 60!

One of the good things to come out of the stay in hospital is that I will now be prescribed omeprazole through my treatment to stop the indigestion.

Should have been having my second dose of chemo on the 2nd July but that has now been postponed for a week, waiting to see whether I get taken off the accelerated protocol given the fun this past week.

I am hopefully completing my last cycle dose of chemo therapy tomorrow as long as my neutrophils don’t drop too low again!! The sickness and gastritis has been horrible. I was advised to use Omeprazole but felt concerned about all the med I was taking so only used it during the treatment week. The Nurse Specialist a couple of weeks ago advised me to take 2 Omeprazole every day in a morning with antisickness tablets  even when not having the chemo and I have noticed an improvement. Not as uncomfortable/bloated and I can eat a little bit more now but still only small amounts. Fingers crossed for you.
