Wide excision for melanoma

Less than one minute read time.

Hevvur made a comment on optical boy's blog about how large his WLE was in consideration to his original mole.  My own primary melanoma was tiny in comparison to his, it was 7 millimetre in diameter and only 1.4 millimetre thick, and while my photo isn't so graphic, you can see that the scar's nonetheless quite spectacular!

As for the ensuing groin dissection... well I do have my modesty, so no photo of that!

My husband’s just had his mole removed, and has to have excision on June 10th. It’s on the top of his head (he is bald) so he had always been vulnerable. When I look at the posts here it looks very much as though there is no hope of a cure, and for the rest of his life (please God he has some) he will be looking for the next problem to appear. I’ve not seen one positive post on here, not one, really cheered me up.

That's quite a battle scar Marsha - didn't realise you'd published it! Glad you're well now tho' - just stay that way!

Sylviemay - there are lots of positives - new drugs are developed and operations often provide a sucessful outcome.  I went 10 years before any return, and even now it seems I'll be OK following surgery. The surgeons are brilliant - got an appointment with my mate Kev again tonight!

    Keep your chin up.

Wear those scars with pride Marsha - we've worked hard for them!

Sylviemay - please don't get so downhearted - you won't see many positive stories on here because those who are cured or in long term remission tend not to visit the site & share their good luck stories.

If your husband has been newly diagnosed with melanoma hopefully the surgery will be successful and he may never have a re-occurrence, not everyone does. And if he does, it could be many, many years before it happens - myself, Marsha & Teresa can testify to that & a newly joined member has gone 30 years before hers returned.

This disease is very unpredictable & what the future holds is a lottery but please take heart from we the survivors that the future isn't as bleak as it first appears.

Best wishes to you & your family and I hope the outcome of your husband's surgery brings you a more positive outlook, love Angie x

Sylviemay, it's exactly as Angie says, I've been on this site and its forerunner for over 2 years now and I've seen so many come and go.  Yes, it's serious and for some people it can be overwhelming, but a lot of people have one or maybe two surgeries and are never bothered with melanoma again.  I know of a lady in her late 70s that had it near on 50 years ago.

That said, you're right too, for the rest of your hubby's life and I hope it's a very long and happy one, he should remain vigilent, and not dismiss any odd lumps or bumps as just one of those things that will go away on its own.
