April 6th 2010 my tribute to MUM

4 minute read time.

At the time my mum died one of the first things I wanted to do is get down my immediate thoughts about the passing of her life. Below is the transcript thatI wrote and was read out in full at her funeral on 12th April 2010

From a Son to his Mother

Mum , I know it has been one of your last wishes that I go to Mauritius , You have always told everyone about the island and told me when it was in the paper or on a television show.

I would like to start with a famous quote from  1896, when the author Mark Twain wrote: "You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius."

I know you never had the chance to visit Mauritius Mum but as Mark Twain said now that you are in Heaven , I guess you can see what it like.

Mum ,  during all of my life you have always looked after me and cared for me and now that you have gone from me you will always be there in some way or some how to make sure that your ‘big son’ , as you used to tell everyone , is looked after.

I hope that Jesus and God have plenty of knitting wool for you to use now that you are with them.

I do not have much time to say how wonderful you also was when you was not Mum , all your friends and people you came across were always greeted with a smile or another £1 for some more raffle  or tombola  tickets. You always wanted to please everyone more so at times than your own needs.

Reg my mother’s companion , friend , husband has not had as much time with mum as the rest of us.She brought him into our family and during their short time together they made each other very happy and sadly that time has come to an end. We all will miss mum so very much and I am sure Mum will want us now to look after Reg in the same way that she had done so.

Mum , I know that if you are listening to this , I miss you so much and I truly believe that one day we will be together again .

I would like to finish with a prayer I found for MUM.

For a Mother who has died

Dear Lord, relying on your promises to us, I turn to you in trust that my mother is with you and that she is enjoying your loving embrace. You alone know how she loved the best she could and how she faithfully endured the struggles that she faced. You know the graces you gave her and you know the grace she was for me and for so many. For all the ways she truly loved the way you loved her, please reward her, Lord. May she enjoy the communion of all her family and friends who are with you.

Lord, I know my mother still loves us who are still here on earth. I ask you that you might listen to her fervent prayers for us. Help me to grow into a new and deeper relationship with my mother now, as I long for the day when we will both meet in your embrace - freed from all that might have hindered our relationship on earth, knowing and understanding everything we did not know or understand on this earth.

I ask you this with faith in the resurrection, trusting my mother's love, and desiring that she know my love for her. Amen.

I will always love you Mum  …….. Your Son Leslie
