Gallows humour was a recurrent thread in our conversations. We enjoyed black and bleak comedies as well. Almost anything sweetened by the ubiquitous saccharine schmaltz was not popular chez nous.
It is, therefore, with black cap and noose in hand, writing in the shadow of a scythe, I recall when I learned Laing’s chemo cocktail included Cisplatin. The first thought that entered my head, apart from the fact it cost something like 2K a dose and has a short shelf life, was one of Rogers and Hart’s classic song. I wish I could remove the thought from my brain and maybe, by inflicting it upon you all, that will do the trick. The tune will come quickly enough as I start the words “We’ll have Cisplatin, The Bronx and Staten Island too ...”
I feel better for getting it out of my system!
