Living abroad and supporting my mother

Less than one minute read time.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last October. Following a lumpectomy they discovered secondaries in her liver. I live abroad and have been visiting her as much as I can. She lives alone and has been managing things as best she can. She gets good support from the hospital, but it is hard knowing how much she has to deal with on her own. My children are small and it would be difficult to leave them for longer that a couple of days but I somehow cannot bear the thought that I cannot do more for her. She is having chemo right now, and the last PET scan showed that the tumors are shrinking. Nevertheless I fear for the future. She is 67. I could not bear to lose her now.

Hi Lal, so sorry to hear of your predicament.  It must be so difficult for you knowing your mum is alone and knowing you cannot leave your small children for very long either.  Would it not be possible to take the kids to live with your mum on an extended holiday?  I hope you manage to work something out.

It is good that the tumours are shrinking and I hope they continue to do so.  Will be thinking of you and your family, Christine xx

    HI Christine,

Thank you for your words of encouragement. Unfortunately my husband won't let me take them for a long time. Anyway my daughter has school till the end of July. Maybe we will be lucky and Mum will get remission and visit us. We are in daily contact, and phone and email all the time. But still I would so much love to hug her and tell her much we care. She is so very important to us all. I hate to see her suffer.

I will keep you posted of how we get on,

    Lal xxx

Hi Lal, what a pity your husband won't let you take the kids, but I suppose it's understandable as he would miss them too of course.  I'm sure your mum will make good progress and be able to visit you soon.

Look forward to hearing from you and hope the news is good re your mum.

    Christine xx

p.s. whereabouts are you living? somewhere nice and sunny I hope! xx

    Hi Christine

I live in Germany, down the south. It is really wet here at the moment, but good weather is forecast for the weekend. I hope to go to ireland around the 22nd for a couple of days. She rang me this morning and was very tense. Tries to do too much all the time. I am begging her to rest more as the chemo drugs are severe. She has 5 more sessions till they do the next PET scan. It is difficult for everyone, but then you will know all about this yourself. Thank you for your emails.

    Lal
