FINGER NAILS STARTING TO FALL OUT!!!!

Less than one minute read time.

Yuk, and oh no!  were my first reactions to finding my 'peter pointer' finger nail hanging off.  Am not sure what to do once it off  to protect my nail bed, any suggestions greatly received.  Finished my chemo (3 FEC100 and 3 TAX) on 2nd July and wasn't expecting this!!

Thank you,

Alex

Thanks everyone, not going to put false nails on don't really like them when I have nails, am loving the cube of jelly a day will try that. The strange thing is have worn black nail varnish since I started my chemo and slather my hands every night in aqueous cream and wear cotton gloves to bed, also after washing my hands put lotion on too, I guess its just me but at least they not too painful.  Have this morning put tape over one thats hanging on by a thread!!

Thank you everyone for all your words of wisdom!

    Love Alex xxxx

I think Liz is absolutely spot on with her advice.  One thing I would do is try to remove the nail as it has come away I dont think it will reattach itself, try it after a bath when your skin is softened from the warm water. I am also a qualified therapist.  And I think when chemo causes these things there really isnt anything you could have done to prevent it.  You could also try a cuticle oil instead of a cream as it is absorbed better into the skin.  Keep the nail bed soft and supple and avoid damaging the sensitive skin by wearing gloves for cleaning and gardening etc.  Your nail will grow back in no time especially as you have now finished chemo.

Thank you Chrissi, will see how I get on after my bath, noticed the skin under the nail seems ok. So  apart from gardening gloves and rubber gloves for cleaning should I cover it or just let it be day to day until the nail has grown back?

Thank you for your kind words.

leave it uncovered for day to day stuff...just be really careful with it. If you were to damage the nail bed this can affect how the nail grows back thats all.

Your more than welcome. I also had taxotere, 4 cycles of it but it never affected my nails at all.  At the time I wasnt aware this was a side effect but I imagine its quite a shock when it happens xxx
