Friday 12 Jan Day 9 post first EC Last Filgrastim this session

3 minute read time.

Well I have started this a bit earlier today, as woke early and decided to get up.

Hubby came home yesterday, and we went to go for a walk, but managed about 400 yards in total. He's done something to his knee and if he trys to walk on it it keeps giving out. I couldn't risk him falling and me trying to catch him so 400yds is better than none I suppose. Hopefully we can get to the doctors today. We will be in real problems, if he can't walk, and help me, especially if I don't have such a good outcome to my second chemo next week.

My brother popped by with some birthday cake and oranges from my parents, plus a coat that was too big for me I had given to my mum thats is a better fit now especially over my picc line. While they were here, I had a shower and my sister-in-law spent ages drying my hair which was so much appreciated, still hardly any hair came out on the hairbrush which, I am finding strange.

We are off to speak with the oncologist today at 3pm, I suppose its to see how I am coping so far. Not doing bad, only had taste go for few days, it's back again now, sleep problems, and a bit of indigestion. The picc line still a bit uncomfortable so will mention that too.

We were planning on going shopping so that I could buy some more chunky loose arm cardigans and some  long sleeved shirts, but might have to put that on hold if hubby can't walk on his knee. I need help trying stuff on so can't leave him in the car. Maybe will ask sister-in-law to meet me next week, before my next session starts.

The birds are starting to wake so the sun will be up soon. I will leave my husband to sleep a little bit longer. I will carry this on when I get back from my appointment this evening.

I had a lovely delivery this morning from Little lifts, I was like a kid at Christmas emptying the contents from the box, all lovely things, and it did lift me when it arrived.

Had a very enjoyable day, hubby manage to see the Dr and he has something called  Meniscus tear, so needs to rest a bit and keep taking the tablets Sweat smile. We ordered a bracel so hopefully with a bit of support it might stabilise it a bit. We didn't go shopping in town but managed to do our food shop, went to Morrisons as close to Hospiral and I managed to get a shirt, new PJs and some harem pants all in the sales.

Got to the hospital and only had about 5 min wait at the most. The oncologist is really lovely and when she asked how I had been hubby chirped up, "just like this" Smiley she smiled and said "so your not going to shout at me then, phew," she was really pleased when I told her I haven't really suffered much at all, she did say the tiredness might get a bit worse, but she's happy for me to take either amitriptalyne or the Phenegran to help with nighttime sleep. I said about the loss of taste, but that I decided to eat different textures to make eating more enjoyable. She said that hopefully this will be a good idication that my next 3 EC should be like fingers crossed Fingers crossedI was told to remember to eat enough as she doesn't want me to lose any weight. I said am eating atleast 1600 calories and she was happy with that.

I showed her my picc line and she is going to suggest that they use a different dressing as that could be what's causing the irritation, plus the fact it's been changed several times since first inserted.

I said I was writing a blog on here and she was really pleased, when I said I wanted to put the positive things, I will put the negative too when it happens, but too often you only see the negative, she agreed with me. I even got a hug when we left.

Ate a huge dinner tonight chilli chicken salad and wraps, and yummy fresh pineapple, I could taste it all Grinning

It's my last Filgrastim injection tonight, yippedy doo dah!!! Well until next weekend but I'm a happy fully stuffed bunny at the moment.

I hope your all doing great and have a lovely evening/day

Sleep well xxx

  • You’re doing so well Alison. Your poor husband with his knee problem is a nuisance though.
Im so pleased that you aren’t having too many side effects- you must be doing all the right things. I’m worried about the Filgrastim injections so glad you’ve made it through.
What a lovely oncologist you have - just the right person.
I had my first EC yesterday and I’m not too bad but strange aches that I haven’t had before. I’m drinking loads so hope that will help.
Thanks for writing this blog it helps me know what I might expect next though everyone is different.

  • Hiya Kaza

I hope that you continue to feel not  too bad, my tip to you is keep as hydrated as you can and just relax and let your body dictate how much andwhat you do.

Have you someone that will do your injections for you? Hubby does mine, I don't know how easy it would be to inject myself.

Yes my oncologist is really lovely. I'm at the hospital in Exeter, they are fantastic, I used to work there, first time meeting lots of these people though as I took early retirement in Jan 2021.

    Have a lovely weekend

    Alison xx

  • i am keeping very well hydrated which is really helping I think so good advice.

I start my Filgrastim injections tomorrow and has to self inject 18 months ago  when I had a hip replacement for anti blood clotting so I think I’ll be ok. My husband wouldn’t be keen but he did help put on the Limbo to keep my dressing clean before I had a bath.
I phoned about my PICC line today as I wondered if it was bleeding like you did but they said just bruising and no problem.
I went to college in Exmouth and met my husband who went to Exeter so we have very fond memories of it. Good job you’re retired - doing all this is a full time job!

  • Hiya Kaza, your braver than me doing your own injection, I could do them when I had IVF but that was like a biro and you just put it on skin and pressed a little button.

It's a small world isn't it. I have a brother who lives in Lympstone, we are about 10 mile out of Exeter but its getting closer every year with all the buildings going up. Good luck with your first Filgrastim injection, I have nothing now until next Thursday when I get my second EC, thats if my bloods are OK on Monday.

That limo thing is impossible to put on and off on your own, suppose they gave it the right name as we have hubby's 2 hands on top and me pulling underneath. Hope you enjoyed your bath
