Sword of Damocles

1 minute read time.

Hi I am new to this-not great with computers! I was diagnosed with a low rectal cancer in June 2008. I had raditherapy and capecitabine followed by an abdoperineal resection of my rectum and anus thus leaving me with a permenant  colostomy-this was performed in October 2008.

I had a scan in June 2009 which showed some tiny nodules on both lungs but the medics were unsure if they were significant or not. There was no change to these on the December scan so was feeling more optimistic. However, the next scan in june 2010 showed growth of 1 of these nodules on my right lung and this was surgically removed in July 2010. I had 6 months of chemo (oxaliplatin and capecitebine) which I finished iat the end of February.

I have had a CT scan today and am having an MRI on Friday. I have a an appointment to see my oncologist on 1st September, I hope its good news but it is like living with the sword of Damocles hanging over you as I am sure many of you know.

On a brighter note I am going away for the bank holiday weekend with my lovely husband sister and brother inlaw and intend to have a lovely time in Whitby.

  • Yes, we patients know that feeling only to well! It is all the 'w-a-i-t-i-n-g......'  for results. I think sometimes the medics like to keep us waiting so they have that little bit of the 'power' over us. I mean scans can be read immediately so why keep you waiting until September?

You enjoy yourself big time in Whitby - juggling hospital appointments becomes the norm unfortunately, for all us cancer sufferers.  I hope you don't mind me asking though, and please don't think I'm too thick - what is the sword of Damocles about? Ann x

It's true the waiting is extremely hard. Hope Whitby is sunny and warm and have some fish and chips for me please.

    Hugs and best wishes
