It's about time I wrote something...

2 minute read time.
Well, I've been a member on here for some weeks and decided it was time to start a blog. Think the reason I didn't before was because I was hoping it wouldn't be neccessary, that OH would not be as badly affected as I'd imagined etc... Unfortunately he has locally advanced prostate cancer, his PSA was 28, gleason 8... Thankfully the bone scan was clear, but his MRI showed that there are some affected Lymph Nodes. Anyway, we had a bloody disasterous day on Wednesday..half way along the journey to the hospital (to an appointment with a doctor who is conducting some sort of trail with chemo in addition to hormone treatment) our car packed in...we are members of the Green Flag, so phoned for help. We'd managed to get off the motorway into a works car park, so we decided to leave the car for a while (after checking that we wouldn't be clamped!) and get a taxi to the hospital. So far, not too bad.. As we were just getting to the oncology dept, my mobile rang (well, buzzed, it was on silent) My son was in a panic, our 4 month old puppy had jumped on the dining table and stolen my husbands tablets (cyproterone acetate) and eaten at least 3 of them.. Imagine my stress, 20 miles from home, no car...I'm sorry to say that the worry of the pup had overtaken my concern for my husband (sorry darling) somewhat, and I was more interested in ringing the vet than taking notice of the doctor..He said because it had been at least an hour since Bobby (pup) had eaten them it was pointless making him vomit, that those tablets were VERY dangerous to such a small pup, and there is no antidote..just watch him closely and have a blood test in a few days if he's not showing any symptoms like wobbling, vomiting, etc.. Anyway, so far he's his usual self. He had a blood test Friday that came back normal so we're keeping fingers, toes and everything else crossed.. Back to OH, we are now waiting to see if he is going to be offered any Radiotherapy or Chemo in addition to the tablets, (yes, THOSE despicable tablets..) and we are going back to the hospital on the 21st. Hopefully, it'll be easier to concentrate next visit.. He feels well, though very angry with his GP for not taking his concerns seriously for 3 years. The treatment could have been so much different if only they had done repeat PSA tests, or even a DRE, he had to ask the GP to examine him...

I just read your blog and wanted to give you a big ((((((hug)))))).  Apart from sympathising with you I had to smile at your puppy story.......and and keeping everything crossed all Ok there.

Whilst I was having my chemo a friend took me over to see a disabled friend who had just been allocated a new assitance dog (Dogs for the Disabled)but had then had a fall and broked her arm.  I took my ancient beloved pooch with and after a coffee us walking wounded (must have made a great sight...follicallly challenged chemo depressive and cripple who couldn't use her crutches cos of broken arm!!!) left said doggles at her place and went for a civilised lunch to cheer ourselves up.

I went ahead to let them out when we got back so they didn't rush out the door and knock Marie over and was greeted by a war zone......one of them (and my pooch is nearly 15 with a clean record) had shredded letters, bags. wicker bins and missing were 2 cucumbers, a loaf and a half.....and 18 months supply of Glucosamine tablets.........and God know what else!

Like you - rang vet only bordering on hysteria and because whatever could had been consumed over an hour ago no point in making them vomit..

Took them up the lane and when her dog went to YKW - well - forget poo bags..........it was like a soda stream of.......oooer better not go on.....there are folk with delicate stomachs on here....

All OK now tho and lots of love and luck with all of those precious to you!!

phew, not just me then??  Your reply made me laugh really loud!! I was so worried about the little fella that my poor husband (Barry) and his ailment just drifted off into insignificance...ah well..

  • Hi Jude'

My pooch also took a liking to a box of pills. I came down early one morning to find one dog had taken and opened a canister of the other dog's pill. And we're talking hundreds here! At 6am I'm on the 'phone to vet screaming "My dog's taken an overdose!"  I had obviously woken him from a deep sleep and he wasn't too pleased. The pills were for a pancreas problem but again... no ill effects for the 'suicidal' dog just a large vet's bill for me!

You certainly had a day to remember - let's hope husband, car, and puppy remain in good working order.

    All the best,

What a day!! Thank goodness you haven't lost your sense of humour lol.  I'm hoping that your puppy is now out of any danger period re the tablets so you can relax a bit now. I hope your husband isn't too upset that he took a back seat for a while lol.

    Take care

Oh what a crap day you had, but like the others I did smile at the dog coming first - well its a baby isn't it.  It reminded me of my sisters labrador who was young and very bouncy, what am I talking about he was always bouncy.  Anyway we came home to find that he had chewed the lid on a bottle of tonic - you know the bright green stuff that your Mum would say you needed when you were run down!.. Some of it had gone on the floor but half the bottle was gone and the dog looked half drunk and half hyper.  Quick visit to the vet who said nothing to worry about it won't harm him, but he'll have an upset tummy and be buzzing for a day or so, you could try taking him for a good run, to run some of the energy out of him - then as we were going out the door said, but you could probably walk him for hours and you would be shattered and he'd still be running.  He was right on both counts the energy and the upset tummy - yeuk

I hope the problem with the car was not a major one and that all goes well on 21 Jan, best wishes to you, your husband and the puppy..

    Take care
