Lost my first hair yesterday

1 minute read time.
As the title says I started to lose my hair yesterday. My scalp had been hurting for a few days and I ran my hands through my hair and a little clump came out. Well... If a little clump comes out then there's obviously more to come so I had a lovely half an hour pulling hair out of my head. What can I say apart from the fact that it had that bubble wrap addictive quality. So now I have a little bald (thinning to be more precise) patch. Nothing falling out tonight so I guess i'll just have to watch TV. Boring! I suppose I will lose a lot more of my 100,000 - 150,000 hairs but at the moment i'm not too stressed about it. If I end up with a whispy Homer Simpson style then it will be a different matter and I will have to take action. The nurse started to talk about wigs with me today but I don't think it's reached that stage yet. I don't think that I even want a wig or even need one. I'm going to move forward with a nice hat and/or a scarf thing depending on the patchiness of the hair loss. As i'm saying a lot these days: We'll see... JD x

hi jd , i think you are doing the right thing & taking it very well . i hated losing my hair but made the decision to have it shaved off because it became a nuissance falling out while i was eating etc . like you though must admit i did pull at it well not much of a pull is it . i don't know which chemo regime you are on is it one that will make you lose it all or one that will thin it ? mine was a all out one so thats why i went for the head shave it did make it easier to deal with . i also prefer the hats & scarfs rather than the wigs i have one but don't use it that much it drives me mad at times & after a while of wearing it i get headache but everyone is different its how you feel thats important. mine has started to grow back now its just covering my head now i must admit i was so excted when i saw it sprouting back again & it lifted my moral . well jd just wanted to add some support to you . you will work out whats the best for you & there are some great hats & scarfs about . at my local hospital we have a group called headstrong they show you how to put the scarfs on in all fancy ways ask if there is one in your area they are run by women that have all suffered from cancer so they know how you feel take care love n hugs theresa xxx

5 months after, the head baldness is now customary, but I will never forget the shock of it.  One tip - as what was left of my hair was coming out for good, it was both agonising and itchy, driving me insane!  The doc prescribed me Betamethasone, a liquid you rub in and bingo! pain and itch gone.

Beware the nose hair and eyelashes loss if that happens to you; you would not believe what a nice little job these hairs do!  But seriously, it becomes a way of life to choose a wildly coloured scarf/zandana every day rather than boring hair washing and styling.

If still allowed, here are a couple of good sites for imaginative head coverings: www.bohemia-fashions.com, and www.headcovers.com.  My favourites are the pre-tied paddded chiffon "zandanas": easy and cool (as in temperature, not trendiness).  Cotton can be chic but hot.  Silk is fabulously cool, but you need a stiff towelling cap underneath to stop it slipping.

Wishing you lots of love and fun experimenting with the head covers

    Cat xx

I guess it is different with chemo in that you end up losing all your hair. With RT, you just lose it where the beam hits so it will make for an interesting result. Like a cute little patchwork on her head... I am giving all the new bald patches lots of (careful) kisses to encourage the skin to stay healthy :-)

Hopefully it will all grow back after JD is finished. If not, then it will be a different story I suppose. It would be upsetting if she will have no or wispy hair on one side of her head for the rest of her life...  We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

The upside of chemo through a catheter and not into your bloodstream - - - no hair loss.

The downside - - - - years too late, I started losing mine many years ago when I was in my 20's (and well)

How they kept a straight face explaining that to a Homer Simpson lookalike sitting opposite them I'll never know.

"yeah... i am in my mid 20s and i'm losing hair already!!! because of this its affecting my life, socially and emotionally. My mom's friend told her about this product thats using chinese natural herb to spray on your hair and they swear by this product. At first i was hesistant to try, but i got desperate. Within 2 months of consistent usage, i see the difference...some of my old bald spot, i see baby hair growing! its been 6 months now.. and my hair had thicken... i got the spray at a local chinese herb store.. but they do have a website...thats where i get my refill www. 88herb. com . i hope this will work for you as it works for me.
