Job Search

Less than one minute read time.

I was diagnosed with cancer shortly after I finished college last year. I am now coming to the end of my treatment with only one more dose of chemotherapy and I will then start radiotherapy. I am beginning to start my job search to start off my career but am unsure on a few things and wondered if anyone had any experiences with job hunting with cancer they would like to share.

First of all I am unsure whether to wait until I am completely finished with treatment before I start applying for jobs as I have been off for a long time and am really keen to get going now. The other thing was whether to disclose that I have suffered from cancer or not. I'm unsure if an employer will think that it might be risky employing someone with cancer in case it comes back.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Ali,
Sorry to hear that your job search has been interrupted by cancer treatment. I can't offer experience on job hunting since I'm retired, but I can say always be truthful in talking to potential employers. If you hide something, probing questions at your interview will find it out.
If you have finished treatment and are believed clear of cancer, I see no reason why a good employer shouldn't take you on and who wants an employer who won't?
It may be worth giving the mac helpline a ring, 0808 808 0000 open Mon to Fri from 9am to 8pm. They may be able to point you in the way of help and advice.
If you apply during your RT and are lucky to get an interview, speak to your team, and they may be able to work around your appointment.
    Good luck,
    Colin

    Hey Colin,

I took your advice and told my employer in the interview about my illness. When I started work I was still getting radiotherapy and they were very supportive and didint mind me coming in a bit late each morning. I have now finished all my treatment and feeling great.

    thanks for the advice,

    Ali

Hello Ali.   I'm glad that Colin gave you the advice you needed regarding employment matters, but I just wanted to add that if ever you wanted a bit more support then join one of the site's various cancer groups which is relevant to yourself.

Sometimes the treatment side effects can linger for a while and quite often the emotional roller coaster can kick in, so it's good to be able to chat to others who have been through the same. Take care and all best wishes.
