Chemo feet!!!

Less than one minute read time.
Hi all, Just about finished my 2nd cycle of 8 of oral chemo (Xeloda). Had xeloda before for 31 days with my radiotherapy and only got painful feet after I finished for a short time. I am on a higher dose now and this has kicked in already, and I've got another 6 cycles to go!!! My hands are also starting to sting. I know this is a common side effect of Xeloda. I was on 3000mcg a day and now I am on 4250mcg. I asked my partner to massage feet for me but even this hurts!!! Anyone got any tips on what I can do to make my feet more comfortable? Thanks Jo x

    Hi Jo

I was put on gabapentin to alleviate short-term tingles and pain.    This is possibly a bit of a last resort.   So, get your OH to up his technique with the messaging so he can become Mr Magic Hands.   Certainly stimulation of the nerve endings through message and gentle exercise helped to subdue my symptoms.

I massage my feet with a sponge that has diprobase cream on it - it is just an emoolument - any would probably do but I get it for diabetes complications anyway. After the massage I slip on some trainer socks - it does make a mess - and find that that does help. If I don't do it then I do have problems. I am not sure really if it works or is just psychological but I am nearly through my third cycle of xeloda and haven't had any trouble up until now.

    Keep smiling

    Love

    Hi,

I'm on my 7th cycle of xeloda and have been bothered with my hands and feet since about cycle 3,

I been doing exactly the same thing as Drew and putting a very heavy duty foot cream(Boot's own brand) on my feet massaging  it in and then slipping on a pair of trainer socks.  I find it really helps as if I don't do it then my feet get really dry and painful.  I use the cream on my hands too which helps but had to answer the door to the postman one morning to sign for a recorded and left quite a bit of the stuff all over his nice clean clipboard..... OOps!  Haven't found too many problems with Xeloda just mainly the exhaustion - I just want to sleep all the time.

    Hope this helps

    Take Care

    Thanks for your helpful replies,

I was put on gabapentin for nerve damage following my 'big op' only took it for a week as the side effects on the internet worried me, but just started again in the hope that it may help.

Will try a combination of your replies, I will try and get some diprobase cream and then get my partner to do the massage!!

I will try the trainer socks as well at bed time.

I will try not to do it myself when the postman is due!!! (made me laugh).

    Thanks again
