Sweet & Sour

Less than one minute read time.
Hi All, Wondering if anyone can offer any tips of foods to eat whilst going through radiotherapy? My mum is halfway through her 2 week treatment for cancer of the gullet and is finding now that certain foods she used to like have completley different tastes, as do drinks. She is off tea and craves milk, but is wanting something sweet and has tried fruit pastilles, polo mints etc but says they have a funny taste. Any suggestions that people can give me would be much appreciated, thanks

Hi hun, thanks for your email.  Taste buds seem to be lost when on chemo.  I know i loved little pink wafers and they seemed to quell my queasy feelings too.  Mini cheddars, I live on when I hardly touched them before and ice cream always goes down well.  I cant stand too much milk in my tea now, it has to be stronger but then I love milk shake more. I love houmous and pitta bread but that doesnt taste the same now.

My chemo finishes on Thursday so I'm hoping to get my taste buds back again.

Keep the blog going and keep us updated hun.

    Love from

    Hi Joanne,

Thanks for emailing me back, you know I hardly every talk to my close friends about my mums cancer and it's weird how it easier to do it on this sort of things.  Funny you should mention about mini chedders as my mum was living off those before her treatment started.  Yesterday she had a PEG feeding tube fitted and was in lots of pain from it last night when I visited her in hospital, hoping this will ease soon and that she can start having feeds through it and not have to worry about food and her weight.  She's finished her radiotherapy now, so we have to wait and see how much the tumor has shrunk by.

Is this your last course of chemo today?  Let me know how you're doing, hopefully pitta and houmous will taste the same again to you

    Jen
