Cheeky Monkey to the rescue

2 minute read time.

We all know that the majority of money spent on cancer research is generated by public donations and I try to do my little bit, I have shaken the can for Macmillan, marshalled races for cancer research uk and have even walked the race for life ( no I do not run). Well I wasn't able to do this years race for life (broken toe ouch!) so decided to do the Christies' Neon walk and enlisted help of one of my daughters and my granddaughter. Now i ought to say that this was twice the distance I have ever done, at night and around water of which I am terrified. We managed to arrive in plenty of time, having discovered that the trams were not operating, so had to fast think of a new route.  Any way walk began... Now my strategy has always been go at a pace... the reasons being I won't be last, I won't get lost and it will be over sooner. So off we went, with my daughter saying " Mum this is a cracking pace, do you not want to slow down a bit?"

Anyway we got round me just having minor aches so wasn't too bad. Ha! that was until we waited for our lift home when my muscles decided to react and completely froze I could hardly get in the car when it arrived.  I arrived home had a hot drink and went up to bed, well it was more like a crawl than a walk. Once in bed the fun began  ( no, not that kind of fun I am sad to say). I became so cold I was shivering and even stealing my husband's body heat did not work.

After a few minutes he in doors suggested a hot water bottle to which I eagerly agreed. Off he went, switched on the lights and they all fused! So there he was trying to find a torch in the dark so that he could mend the fuse. I meanwhile am still shivering away. Eventually he arrives back upstairs, fuse mended, lights working, hottie wrapped in teatowel.

But then he thinks to himself, the bottle is very hot, the tea towel quite small we might get burnt, So we have a quick think and both hit on the solution simultaneously " Cheeky Monke!" Now Cheeky Monkey is one of those cuddly toys that have space for a hottie in their tums. So off husband goes to find him.... not too easy as our grandson is having his first solo sleep over and has the aforesaid cuddly toy in his bed. Luckily husband was able to extradite toy quite easily and I soon han my hottie stuffed in him, Cheeky Monkey, not my husband. And yes he did come to the rescue ( Cheeky Monkey I mean) as within a short time I was as warm as toast and in the land of Nod.

I have, however, paid the price for my fast pace, can harly move, have hurt my foot (it is so painful...serves me right for not wearing my trainers) and have been in bed all day. But it was worth it as we have raised over £200. Now I must find an easier way next time.......

    danensis,

and the drug companies are in it for what reason.... altruism or making more money for themselves? You may disagree with my opening statement by all means, the point I was making in a light hearted blog was that there is very little public ( ie government) money chanelled into cancer research And yes I am aware of the need for cut backs in the present financial environment. And I object to your final ststement about well meaning charities, the event I took part in was for the Christie hospital, and I can assure you that this charity is not a "well meaning one"
