Got a date for RAI

1 minute read time.

Hi all,

Went to Newcastle yesterday to meet an oncologist. Didn't learn much that was new, but I now have a date for RAI - 1 Feb '11. It still seems like a long way off, but at least the whole family can relax and enjoy Christmas without special diets and exclusion zones.

I've been given the meds for the Thyrogen injections (they're in the fridge) so I won't have to come of my Thyroid hormones - which is great, which also means my body will not have slowed down before D-day and the RAI will hopefully pass out of my system quicker. Also, because I'll be given the Thyrogen, I've been taken off T3 and I'm back on T4 175 mcg - I'm hoping for a smooth transition.

Plenty of time now to think about travel sized toiletries, something to keep me chewing (2nd day I think) - might try a pack of cranberries, a 'disposable' mobile phone (they don't have Patientline), something to add to all that water you have to drink (I've been asked to bring in my own water - apparently their own water doesn't taste very good), collect a few books and generally hope for a short stay.

Hey glad you got your date.

Good that you get to stay on your thyroxine.  I was quite poorly on the second LID so they said I may be able to have this should I ever need an RAI again, but thyrogen is not routinely offered where we are.

For diet ideas, try www.thyca.org Low Iodine Cookbook.  It is about 100 page document, in case you want to print it off and also be aware that it is an American publication, so the restrictions may be slightly different to here.

My favourite meal in there was chicken ridgewood and my mom in law cooked it in advance and froze it, so i just had to microwave it with basmati rice.

Which hospital will you be at hun? Can't believe you have to bring you own water!  NHS saving LOL. I threw everything in the bin at the hospital before coming out, that way I didn't have to worry about contamination etc.

    xx

    Hi little miss_1,

Thanks for the link to low iodine diet ideas - I'll have a browse.

I was a bit shocked at having to bring in my own water, surely their supply can't taste that bad! This is the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman, Newcastle - it's a brand new building.
