Sickness Benefit

Less than one minute read time.

I am told that I cannot work during chemo., treatment. I do not qualify for any benefit even though I paid tax and national insurance for 43 years. This is because I have a mortgaged house which I rent out. The rent pays the mortgage. My house is also mortgaged. I did not know that sickness benefit is means tested

I don't know if you could claim contribution-based ESA?  DLA may also be an option, depending how long treatment lasts.  It may be worth seeing a benefits advisor at somewhere like CAB, or if you ring Macmillan they may be able to help.

  • Contribution based ESA is also out of the question simply because I have another house.  I re-mortgaged my own house 7 yrs. ago so I could put a deposit down. I spoke to the Macmillan nurse and she doesn't know anything re: benefits.  And this is why I paid tax and nat. ins for 43 years. I was self employed for 24 years and since the operation have now lost all my customers. I now depend on my three sons who don't earn much for themselves let alone for me.  One of my sons lost his job last week and they are stressed  to the limits.  I would be better off leaving the country and coming back in saying I have lost my passport and claiming asylum.  I may then get a 2 million pound house in London kitted out with a big t.v. and the rest of it, all paid for by the State.

    Hi Jody,

Sorry to hear you haven't been able to get any benefits. You could try calling our Macmillan Support Line and asking to speak to one of our benefits advisers - they're experts in this area so they may be able to help. It's freephone 0808 808 0000 (Mon-Fri, 9am-8pm).
