3 minute read time.
Such a long story to tell but will try and keep it as brief as possible..We have had such a roller coaster since September 2012..My dad was struggling with finishing some sentences and knew that this wasn't normal so he went to the doctors ( no other symptoms other than speech) The doctor thought he had a mini stroke and sent him to the hospital for a MRI scan which was when they found the brain tumour. Prior to this my dad was very fit! ( ex fireman of 35 years).. He had his biopsy 2 days later and after being told dad was ok,we got a phone call to say he had taken a turn for the worse and has suspected brain haemorrhage. We waited for hours in total dis belief that this had happened. Once dad had been stabilised we were visited by the surgeon who told us that my dad was at the lowest possible point and we almost lost him!.They didn't know at that point how he would wake as he was sedated and in intensive care. The day after Dad came round in intensive care and we had no idea what to expect. He woke by recognising my mums voice and reached out to give her a huge cuddle which we were so relieved about that he recognised us all. He was however left with huge deficits including loss of peripheral vision,no feeling completely down the whole of his right side, unable to read, unable to write and couldn't talk at all. We were informed that when the blood clot had been removed that they also removed most of the tumour at the same time (this was not planned at first as it was too deep in his brain) We were then told the devastating news that the tumour was in fact a GBM4. Dad underwent 3 weeks of intensive radiotherapy As the weeks went on Dad learnt to walk again,he was able to move his arm to the ceiling and regained lots of speech ( not as he was before biopsy ) but incredible to say how he was when we saw him in intensive care. He's such a strong man and we watched him go from being confined to a wheelchair to walking again to climbing the stairs. However in January we were faced with him fighting for his life again when breathlessness went un noticed by professionals no matter how many times we mentioned it and he ended up with a pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs) and we almost lost him again!...But dad being the strongest man I know pulled through it yet again and improved (daily injections needed now for the rest of his life to thin his blood) All scan results have shown positive since September, we have been told that this type of tumour always returns and if it does that they can't do any more for dad as he is not fit enough for chemotherapy and there are risks involved in him having it due to blood thinner injection,he's had maximum radiotherapy and surgery is a defo no go after last time. The past week dad has shown some detioriarion with mobility and speech as well as comprehension,we are going to try and push for another scan but doctor thinks he may have had a stroke although they thought that at the very beginning. I just can't believe how much he has been through,he's 63 and like I say had such a healthy lifestyle .it just doesn't seem fair and still now we feel so targeted .He really is the most thoughtful man I know and has always put everyone before himself including risking his own life to save others... Any advice/ similar situation text are greatly received I pray for a cure of this truly devastating disease ASAP
