Wigs

Less than one minute read time.

Hi,

I have decided to buy a wig before I start Chemo. Does anyone have any advice on whether I should get a human hair one or a synthetic one? Are human hair one difficult to look after...? Do synthetic ones look natural? Any advice would be great!

Thanks

    Hi Sarah

You may be entitled to a free wig, I would recommend you check with the ward before spending loads of money.

As far as whether to go for real or synthetic, I can't say as I went for the bald and proud look!

Best wishes for your treatment - hope it goes uneventfully!

    Hi Sarah

I went for free nhs wig which was synthetic and looked great. Had completely different colour and style and popped it on every time I went out until weather got warm. Then I used scarves and turban.Get it before chemo as hair starts coming after 2 weeks,

well mine did. Have fun with it, your own hair will soon come back

I also opted for a prescription synthetic wig. The ladies in the shop were lovely and actually order one specially for me so I could compare two colours. It looked really good and once I persuaded myself it wouldn't fly off  or drop off it was comfy to wear. Work colleagues were amazed at how lifelike the wig was.

I only needed it for a short time as once the chemo was over my hair began to grow back  quite quickly.... different colour and differnt texture, I now have curls.

    Take care

  • Hi Sarah

I had a synthetic one too and like Karen had it free from the NHS. They will give you a voucher but if you want a real hair one you will have to pay the extra. My wig by Trendco was £90.

I was told that the synthetic ones were best as with real hair ones had to be washed and styled the same as your real hair. You can wash the synthetic one and shake it and it will be perfect. It will dry overnight.

Best of luck whichever you choose.

    Hi Sarah

Like Sue I got mine from Trendco. They are specialists and extremely helpful and understanding. It's synthetic and people are amazed when I tell them it's a wig. I went for synthetic for ease.

    Best of luck
