Tanglewood

2 minute read time.

"Ladies, we are to have a male amongst us!" Eyes that were only moments before closing in the humid air flew open in surprise and a general shuffle and murmur ensued.  They were all aware that a couple of men had been interviewed for the post, but no one had expected this all female bastion to be allowed the dubious pleasure of being broached.

Helen North, head teacher at Tanglewood primary school smiled having regained the attention of her staff at the end of this rather long end of term staff meeting, she continued, "His name is Joe Hemsley and he comes with very good references from his two other schools, he will be teaching in year six and I'm sure we will find he brings a refreshing perspective to our community"  More murmurings and Helen was sure she heard the mention of 'male facilities', which made her smile again before continuing, "We had a very good selection of applicants and it was difficult to make our decisions but the governors and I feel sure that we have been lucky in finding two new members of staff to complement our team.  Our second appointment is Natalie Fox, a lovely girl and an NQT who impressed us all with her enthusiasm.  Natalie will take a year one class and Sally will be her mentor for the year, but I am sure you will all help her settle in and find her feet as quickly as possible."

Sally Arnold, the deputy head, looked up and smiled an acknowledgement, she could do without the extra work involved in taking on the new girl, but Helen had asked her specifically.  A few nods went around the room, as most people had assumed that they would be having a newly qualified teacher, a much cheaper option instaffin and would be some young blood for the school, that always went well with the parents.  Helen noticed Kate Appleby, tucked in beside the rather large figure of the deputy head, exchange a quiet word with Sally and was surprised when she saw her briefly squeeze the older woman's hand, as if in silent support.

"Both Natalie and Joe are hoping to make it in this week to meet their new classes, but as you will appreciate their commitments may not allow at this late stage," Helen concluded.  As she began gathering up her paperwork the staff realised that the long awaited end to the meeting was about to come.  With a few further brief messages and good wishes for the summer holidays, the meeting was wound up and fresh air wafted in through the opened door.

Well, there's a turn up for the books, appointing a man to Tanglewood," Gelicity Harper murmured as they packed away files and books.

"Just as long as he knows his place is all I can say!" replied Julia Adams, a feminist, she felt a man could only stir up trouble, with both staff and pupils.

Rosemary - Since you mentioned that you had decided to carry on with your writing I have been waiting for a taster, so thank you SO much for posting the first few paragraphs of your book and I am extremely glad that you have resurrected this project.

And yes, now I have started I DO want to read the rest, so your brave decision that now is the right time to continue is, in my opinion, the correct one.  Hats off to you!

I know that I should take a leaf out of your book (pardon the pun!) and find a project of my own to work on.  Be proud of yourself, very proud of yourself.

    Judi xxxxx

P.S.  Although I have to admit I am slightly disappointed that it is such a short passage!!!
