I'm feeling more reassured today. I hesitated in coming back to this site as I thought my dental worries were so trivial compared to what others are going through. Glad I did though. Found some very helpful people in the Head and Neck Group who thankfully know a lot more about the complications of post radiotherapy extractions than my dentist does. I'm currently looking back through older threads to look for more useful information.
I also wondered about continuing with the blog. My current problem is nothing compared to what others are facing. But then I thought maybe I can do some good here. If I share some distraction tips that I learnt through my cancer treatment then I just might help someone out there along the way.
I found that one of the worst thing about waiting for news or appointments was that worrying kept me awake at night. A friend I made on my cancer journey taught me all sorts of meditation and relaxation techniques. Last night I tried to remember the one to help you sleep. It was years since I'd used it so the details were a little hazy, but it went something like this.
Firstly we summon the magic fairy. (It doesn't have to be a fairy, any mythical creature of your choice will do.) She flies in on her winged horse and produces a parchment scroll and a quill pen. I then proceed to list all my worries and she patiently writes them down. The scroll is rolled up and placed in a box. The box is locked and I help tie a pretty bow round it. She says she'll put the box away somewhere safe for a few hours while I get some sleep. I can have my box of worries back in the morning. I choose a safe place for her to hide the box for me, she kisses me goodnight and she flies away.
I woke up this morning after a lovely night's sleep. Started thinking back about the relaxation technique. Not sure I remembered it quite right, keep thinking I've forgotten something. Ah yes, that's right, I've forgotten where I told the fairy to hide the box.
