Mums pain

Less than one minute read time.

Mum was diagnosed with NSCLC last Feb, and initially did well with her chemo. The tumour actually shrunk a little!

Now though she has severe pain at the tumour site which regular meds don't help. She has tried Trammadol which justs upsets her stomach and does not seem to help, so I am looking into the next step.

She is a wonderfull woman who never complains and has just been tolerating this for a few weeks. We did't even know had bad things were until she had a C T scan on Friday.

Sometimes you just feel as though there is no one to call on with questions, her Mac nurse is good but somehow the communication lines breakdown.

Does anyone else take something a bit stronger, other than Opioids?

Hi Deborah,  sorry to hear about your Mum.  If the communication isnt great with the Mac Nurse, there is a Macmillan Helpline, I spoke to them about my Dad and his medication and they gave me some other ideas and drug names, which we mentioned to the Mac Nurse when she came and she then changed his drugs.  Alternatively the hospital Mac Nurse (working with your mums consultant) should be able to help and advise you.

Wishing you and your mother all the best on your difficult journey.

    hi deborah

i too have non small cell cancer - i have suffered lots of pain - that is until i eventually went onto MST and oral morphine - i dont take oralmorphine  at the moment which is good - honestly - i feel fine on them - i thought i would be like a zombie but to be honest - you soon get used to taking them and it is amazing how much better you feel without the pain - both physically and mentally -  all i can say is give them a go - i do take quiet a high doseage but your mac nurse of doctor will sort that out for your mum i'm sure - hope you get this sorted for her - there should be no need for your mum or anyone to be in pain - take care - karen - xoxo

thankyou for your replies and sorry its taken so long.

It's all been a bit of a whirlwind re mums treatment and hosp apts.

Mum is considering the patches at the moment but is currently staying on co-codamol. I think she imagines the strong pain killers will make her drowsey and wants to stay awake as much as poss, as she already gets exhausted easily.

We are all going along with what she wishes to do and just support her decisions. When things get bad I am sure she will be happy to have the stronger meds. I am glad the medication works for you and thankyou for your advice.

    Take care
