Assessment Day

Less than one minute read time.

Hi all, today was my assessment day at the brand new oncology centre at Castle Hill hospital in Cottingham near Hull.  The place is marvellous not like a hospital at all.  The actual assessment took just under 4 hours and i was shown round the treatment room, very nice. My nurse, mandi, gave me an injection in my bum ( i think she enjoyed that) and i started taking the folic acid tabs.  My treatment starts a week today, the 28th, and i have to be at the centre by 8-30am.  So much to take in but i'm sure the nurses and doctors will help me every step of the way.  The two chemo drugs i will be taking are Pemetrexed and Cisplatin.  All you old hands out there can you give me the lowdown of your experience with these two drugs, i know we are all different but it might help me.  I'm somewhat apprehensive, but also very glad my treatment won't be too long now in starting.   Happy darter

hi - i started with the same regime as you but when i went back for my second cycle i was told i wouldn't be able to have the cispltin any more as it was giving me a ringing in my ears and that it could cause me to go deaf - they changed it to carboplatin/pemetrexed - i had three cycle of this (total of 4 altogether) - it was very succesful and my cancer shrunk from 5.5cm to 3.5cm - i have also had twenty sessions of radiotheraphy at leeds since then - i am now treatment free - i finished my rt on the 6th may - i have not seen the new part of castle hill but it sounds lovely - i was there in aug 2008 to half the top left lobe removed - every one there was just so lovely - i hardly had any side afects - i didn't loose any hair it didn't even thin out - that was a bonus - i wasn't sick and didn't fel sick - the only problem i had was that i felt absolutely wiped out and wanted to sleep a lot - but if you asked my family they would tell you that i still insisted on doing every thing for myself and others as usual so that maybe had something to do with being tired - i also suffered from and still am suffering but not quiet as much from hot sweats - they are horrid - but not as bad as what some others have had to face - so i hope that you will be as lucky as me and that it all goes well for you - keep me posted on how your doing - i am going to turkey on sunday for a weeks all inclusive with my little girl - we are sooooo looking forward to it - take care - love karen - xoxo
