Christmas 2012 update

1 minute read time.

Dad went for his Endoscope thing up his backside.

Had an appointment with a consultant, who said about having an operation to remove.

We had a reasonable Christmas and New Year, making the most to be together.

Yesterday Dad got a call from the hospital to come up to A&E, as they wanted to see him. He thought it a bit strange, but tropsed up to the hospital all the same with my mum in tow. However when they got there no-one seemed to be expecting them, one nurse said to my dad not to worry it was probably just constipation - which didn't get a good response from my dad. When they eventually got to see the doctor, my dad said can't you just look up my notes on the system, the doctor said he couldn't it wasn't allowed! So having wasted 2 hours, my dad said he'd had enough and walked out!

Once home, they got a call from the hospital, asking them to go back as they needed some x-rays. My mum did grudgingly get my dad back.

I am a little confused as they have been told that the x-rays are to see what type of bowel cancer he has, so they can determine how to treat him. Apparently there are 3 types, one treatable with Chemo, one with Radiotherapy and one is operable.

The stuff I have read said about operations to remove, nothing about just Radio or Chemo to cure. My previous experiances with this awful disease have proved that Radio and Chemo are usually used to allivate system or reduce the tumour size not remove completly.

So I would be most grateful if someone who has had Bowel cancer and has been cured using just Radio or Chemo could reassure me.

Apparently there is a big meeting at the end of next week when they will discuss my dads case, and then they will get an appointment to talk to the consultant regarding the action they are taking. Fingers crossed.

    Hi Sue,

It does depend on the tumour and type. I had combined chemo and radiation for my anal cancer to cure it. I had a colostomy, but that was only to get me through the treatment and have had it reversed now so yes, for some, it can be done that way.

Hope all goes well with the meeting and it is positive news.

    Thank you Little My

I knew you had a colostomy, but thought you had surgery to remove your tumour as well. My dad really doesn't do being ill or hospitals, so in some ways I hope he doesn't need surgery, otherwise I think they may need to keep him in an induced coma to get him to stay there - hehehehe.

Fingers crossed for positive news :-)

I don't do ill or hospitals either!!! They have this new thing now where they want you up and about as soon as possible... I called it Boot camp, they call it enhanced recovery scheme. anyway, it suits people like us who don't want to be there!

My surgeon lied to me about how long  I would be in for... he said, well you wouldn't have come in would you ? Fair point...

Let us know what they decide and I am sure he'll meet whatever it is head on!
