Stopping Tamoxifen

Less than one minute read time.
Hi everybody, I have a question regarding stopping Tamoxifen. I will have been on Tamoxifen for 5 yrs in September and my consultant has suggested stopping it then. I am pre-menopausal so cannot be offered aromatose inhibitors. I feel a bit out on a limb as I feel taking Tamoxifen is a bit of crutch and am frightened that if I stop, the cancer will come back. I did ask the doctor about this and she just said that continuing on this drug can increase your chances of endometrial cancer, which I already knew. She said I could continue on Tamoxifen if I wish and to go online and find out what others have done. I did read one article which said that a study in America found that staying on Tamoxifen had no benefits whatsover, but as I said previously, I feel it would give me peace of mind. Has anyone else been at this stage and, if so, what did you do? I would be so grateful for comments which may help me decide what to do. Best wishes to everyone, Christine xx

  • Hi Christine,

On the top right of the page is a box containing the words "Got a question? Ask a nurse". If you click on the words Ask a nurse it will lead you to a form where you can ask your question. I have no medical qualifications but I have heard that there is no benefit from continuing to take Tamoxifen after five years. I understand that the medical profession use the yardstick of five years past diagnosis with no recurrence being classified as 'cured'. A patient free of cancer - cured - has the same chance of developing another cancer as anyone else.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Kate, thank you for your reply.  Every little helps as they say lol.

I have already asked the nurse this question, but just wanted other people's opinions.

Apart from the information supplied by the nurse, they advised phoning breast cancer care to talk to someone who has experience of this and I will surely do that.

Thanks again, best wishes Christine xx

Christine I dont think Iv been pre meno whats it, so I cannt help you much but for myself I would have the stuff with a bit of Jack Daniels to water it down a bit at foirst (you can see i have taken my own advice on the jack daniels alreadytonight) but then I woulf writwedown the amounts of each as a log for a while ,increasing the % of jack danieals for a while and writing the doses down and any effedcts like, stuff the spelling, and things like that when you get to the point where the log doesnt make sence note the% of Jack Daniels to medication and then stop the medication bit.If as I suspedt the total lack of medication in your Jack Daniels isnt a noticable factor you can ussume that the medicant is an uneeded extra and is damaging the benificial effedcts of the pure nectar that is Jack Daniels and just swop it for a nice slot of soda water.

Hi Pete, sorry to hear you haven't been premenopausal, but I'm sure your time will come soon lol.

I took your advice, but substitued Vodka for the Jack Daniels and Yippee it worked!  That's it no more prescribed medication for me, I'm self medicating from now on.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
