My Mistake!

1 minute read time.

A while back I contacted Breast Cancer Care to see what support they could offer me seeing as my local hospital dont seem to care too much about secondary breast cancer patients. When I got my primary 2 years ago they swamped me with info, phone numbers and my very own breast care nurse, who called now and again/popped in when I had appointments etc. This time I got squat!! After I had surgery to remove a node from my neck (very painful) they gave me a leaflet for a lumpectomy but had crossed out lumpectomy on the front and scrawled excision biopsy in its place!! Anyway they put me down for a telephone support group, something I did previously for younger women with BC. I really enjoyed the last one so again was looking forward to today when the first session was due at 11am

Then I got a phone call at about 10am from the Macmillan unit asking if I was going for my treatment today at 11!! Oh I thought it was tomorrow, well thats what I had put on my calendar anyway!! So after some negotiating I managed to change my treatment app for 12.30 today and still do the support group. Phew, sorted. Silly me!!

So the group was great, I feel that I have aired some things that were bothering me with the other ladies and hopefully we can really help each other over the next 4 weeks.  One of the things I told them about was my secret journal I have been keeping. I actually started it when I first noticed the lumps in my neck as I sooo knew what they were going to be. Some days I put some very deep and meaningful stuff in there and other days its just waffle. But it has helped me 'say' some things I need to but also which will be private until I am no longer here.  Treatment went fine too, in and out really.

Well thats me for today, I am absolutely freezing but cant afford to have the heating on anymore than necessary. Will have to have a hot cuppa coffee and get the duvet out.

Love to all

Hi Chrissie, i was diagnosed earlier this year with BC and to be honest have only spoken to macmillan nurse 4 times, and 2 of them have been when i have contacted her. I have gotten most of my information from the lovely people on both this forum and the BCC forum.

Just a thought but could you get a macmillan grant to help with your heating cost? Its surely something you need to keep warm?

    take care

    Hey Chrissi,

I have a secret blog too - other than my daily doings.....a real blog about whats happened along the way.  I will give Tony the address of it, as and when I feel ready....so not for a good few years I hope. It does help because you get it out of your system without burdoning or making anyone feel bad.

Glad the group was good and you got your treatment.

I know what you mean about financial constraints, I retired in August, I only earnt under £500 a month but it paid the mortgage........I'd rather have £500 too much than have to find an extra £500!  However I have had the heating on ALL DAY, drying the laundry on radiators, it was really piling up and love the smell of fabric softeners LOL

Although I had cancer in the breast, it isn't classified as breast cancer - it's a form of soft tissue sarcoma (angiosarcoma) so I've had no breast care nurse/ support since original diagnosis last year.

This site has kept me going through good days and bad. I only keep a journal of the good things that happen, so I can look back and reflect on just how much in my life I should be grateful for.

I agree with Anna, try for a grant as no-one in this day and age should be freezing, regardless of any other condition!

    love and gentle hugs
