First Ever Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day!!

Less than one minute read time.

This Wednesday, October 13th will be the first ever Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day in the UK.  I know breast cancer is huge in the media and gets a lot of press which does at times overshadow other cancer types.  Obviously I hope everyone gets the support, care and treatment they deserve but being a SBC sufferer myself this is something I am passionate about.  I was approached by Breast Cancer Care as I have done a bit of media work for them in the past and they asked if I would speak to a journalist from the Mirror newspaper.  They were keen to help promote this new awareness day and highlight the issues surrounding SBC and wanted someone to share their experiences about lack of support and understanding of SBC.  I hope you will all have a look at the article as it is an eye opener and maybe not what you would be expecting especially when you think how much promotion and awareness there is of breast cancer.

I agree that there is little awareness of SBC, I hadn't realized until I was diagnosed just how many people seem to get it.  I was 18yrs post BC when I got my symptoms and one of my work colleagues was diagnosed just a few weeks later after 9 years clear.  I would be interested to know what percentage of BC sufferers get SBC?

They dont know as there are NO statistics...they have no idea how many women are living with it which is shocking!! You are right though it seems to get brushed under the carpet, like they dont want to promote it and raise awareness.  Hopefully this will help to improve things xx

  • Hi Chrissi,

Just wanted to say good luck and to remind people if you get the chance MEN have SBC also, my lovely husband passed away on the 12/09/10 after fighting SBC for four and a half years. There is not enough publicity for the many men in the country that also die of this awfull disease.

    Hi Chrissi,

Too many people regard breast cancer as one of the "softer cancers" that are easily curable ( Not that I mean there are any soft cancers!) We really need to get the message across that secondary breast cancer is a reality for many of us.

    Hi Chrissi,

Look forward to reading your article I agree that secondary breast cancer needs more publicity and awareness from both healthcare professionals and the public. However, I feel that as you say it is a bit of a taboo subject. Not collecting statistics regarding secondary breast cancer is wrong as these could be used both in research and to raise awareness.
