Catching a Cold

Less than one minute read time.

Well, my desens nurse had a cold while I was getting chemo and being desensed.  She wore a mask intermittantly, coughed and sneezed away from everyone and into her sleeve;  told me how handwashing is very important in the spread of colds, etc.  And guess what?  Can you guess?  Yep...I have a cold...five days out of chemo and nearing my nadir...hope my poor old body can shake it before the coming of nadir!  And this I can assure you...No one who has a cold will ever take care of me again.  And don't you.  I was soft, easy and allowed her to care for me when she shouldn't have.  What dopes...both of us.

We live and learn Cella.....I hope you don't suffer too badly and too long with the cold.

I have seen nurses coughing and spluttering and some hardly able to talk working in oncology - yet there is a sign up for patients who "Think they might have a contagious infection" to not come in!!!!!

    Feel better soon xx

Its that 'frightened to offend' wire up that so many of us have Cella, had the same expeience with a nurse when I was in isolation with neutropenia, although amazingly I got away with it and didnt catch anything. Crazy isnt it that we just meekly say nothing when we know that whats happening is unreasonable and in this case downright dangerous! You are so right to urge people to be assertive. In the meantime I hope the colds mild and you fight it off soon, sending you white cells across the ether, Karen xox

So sorry to hear that you got that cold, i was wondering how it went after reading what had happened. We are silly to be frightened to offend and put our health at risk but we do do it.  I think we should be issued with get out of jail free cards whilst going through this, whereby we can complain about anything and not be worried about offending.

hope you feel better soon,  keep an eye on that temperature

Cella113 - I used to be frightened to offend, but having been up the A & E with my sister when she has a temperature after catching infections - nobody get's past me without the 3rd degree. It's your body so you cherish it & keep the 'infected/ unclean' away ! Bit harsh I know, but if they don't like it tough they should know better & if they don't they can damn well come with me to the A & E to see the whole process for a good few hours. Bit of a rant I know, but been there & done that with my sister. Good luck & look after yourself - you are the number 1 person & don't forget that. X Jewels

    Hi Cella

I had my final chemo yesterday - yippee and my chemo nurse told me that her department actually frowns upon anyone taking time off with a cold.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon

    Love
